Looking to change my card to something different

Postby Mountainmanduy » Mon Mar 04, 2013 6:40 am

I have had my gold card amex for a couple years, and I do not find it justified to pay the high annual fee. I signed up because my dad wanted the referral bonus, and I was new to the credit card scene. I been thinking about signing up for the Starwood Hotel card, because so many people have raved about it.

If I want to upgrade/downgrade to a Starwood Hotel Card, would my credit score drop.

Secondly, if the starwood hotel card has a promotion, will I be able to take advantage of it?

Thanks for any help credit card gurus!

you would want to apply for the SPG card and once approved you get the card it should be back dated. Once you verify that cancel the gold. You can not do a PC from a charge to a credit card.

Today I had my Delta gold converted into the Blue (with MR points). I never used that card (other than for the sweet 35,000 bonus miles) so I can't justify the $95/year fee. That's my second AmEx PC this week.

Hello Ncosky thanks for the reply. Sorry I am super new about this. What do you mean backdated? Does that mean my starwood amex credit history will be the same date as the Amex Gold? What is PC? Also, how do you attach accounts to the bottom of my post like you did?

Backdating means that when you open a new account with Amex it will be reported with the date of the first product you had. This helps with you credit report age. (only amex does this)

PC = Product Change. Going from a Delta Gold to a Blue or Green to Gold.

You can add a signature after you reach a certain amount of posts. I think it is 10. You just go to settings at the top of this page and then it is on the left about half way down. It won't show there until you are allowed to do such.

And for your case. Wanting to go from a Gold card to a SPG won't happen because one is a charge card (PIF monthly) and the other is a Credit Card which lets you carry a balance. You would want to sign in to your account and on the top right there is an option for additional cards and you can apply for the card you want. If it is approved then a Hard pull will be reported. If declined then only a Soft pull which is awesome as it doesn't impact your credit.

The Costco card is free if you pay a membership fee there already.

I don't believe you can convert the Gold into a Starwood card as one is a charge card and the other is a credit card and AMEX usually views the two as being two entirely different lines of products. If you convert cards, I also don't believe you'd be eligible for any sort of signup bonus but it all depends on how you pitch your case.

If you're trying to get a new AMEX while trying to avoid the high annual fee of the Gold and the credit hit from closing the account, I'd downgrade to a Green card for the moment while you build some positive history with another card before you consider cancelling entirely
