Got approved, was this a mistake?

Postby wisc » Thu Feb 07, 2013 2:36 am

I'm 22 and a college student. I have one credit card from my bank with a $500 limit, I've had this card for 1 year. I usually put around $150-200 on it a month and pay it off in full.

My income is around $10,000 a year. No loans or debts of any kind, no assets or investments.

I have never checked my credit score, nor have any idea what it could be.

I had no intention for applying for a second card as I mainly use cash or a debit card.

But the other day I received a preapproved letter from American Express for the Blue Cash Everday Credit Card with 15 months 0% Apr and then 12.9% after the initial period. I didn't know much about credit cards but had once heard that having an American Express is good. I went to the online site and applied with the invitation number I received in the mail, I put all true information on the application (that I have listed above).

I was approved. Or so it said on the website and email I received.. do you think this could be an error? And when I receive the mailing in 7-10 days I will be denied?

Nope. You should be approved.

Those are very low numbers, though. Will be interesting to find out what your credit limit will be...

Yup, you were definitely approved. Congrats! The BCE is a very sought-after card and you got it with a year's worth of responsible credit. Keep it up, and keep us updated on your credit limit when you find out (if you don't mind sharing; this info can be very useful for potential BCE cardholders). After 61 days, you can request up to a 3x credit line increase.

That is no error, congrats you got approved!

I got the bce with only 12k listed income as well. They ended up giving me a 2k limit and then after 61 days i requested 6k, but they countered with 4.1k and i took it.

Thanks for the responses!

It's been a week and I haven't received anything either via email or regular mail.. but I'll keep you posted on the credit limit when I find out more. I'm definitely curious what the limit will be as well!

I just received my card in the mail!

I was shocked to see that my credit limit is $4,900 .. especially with my limited credit history and fairly low income. I'm not complaining, however :)
