Amex backdating question

Postby dlgoldamex » Tue Feb 05, 2013 11:20 am

I've been an AU on my parents' Amex since April '12 and I just received my own Delta Amex with a member since date of '13. Am I mistaken in thinking it should say '12?
Gold Delta Skymiles -AU- $25k- 4/12
Citi Forward Visa- $6.1k- 8/12
Amex Gold Delta Skymiles- $3.8k- 1/13
BofA Travel Rewards Visa Sig- $5k- 1/13
Amex Blue Cash Everyday- $5k- 7/13
Barclaycard Arrival WEMC- $5k-1/14
Cap One Quicksilver Visa Sig- $10k- 4/15

From what I understand, being an authorized user won't get you backdating since you're in no way legally responsible and you aren't technically a cardmember. You can always call and ask.
Amex Platinum
Amex BCP 21K
Amex SPG 5K
Barclaycard Arrival Plus WEMC 5K
Chase Sapphire Preferred 23.5K
Credit Union 10K
Discover IT 7.75K

Backdating is usually representative of you as a credit holder rather than you being an authorized user on someone's account. There is an exception I can think of. When my wife and I got married, we had our own Amex cards (Gold for me, Green for her). When I got Platinum, we consolidated and she became an authorized user of my card. But her card still reflects her original date of '91, back to her original green card.
Cards:
American Express Platinum (NPSL)
Penfed Platinum Reward Visa ($28K)
Chase Freedom Visa ($25K)
Fidelity American Express ($20K)
American Express Blue Cash Preferred ($20K)
Bank of America Cash Rewards MasterCard ($20K)
Citi Thank You Preferred Visa ($9.5K)
Chase Sapphire Preferred ($7.5K)
US Bank Cash + Visa Signature ($7K)
Discover IT ($4K)

I would give them a call. Don't call it backdating...let them know that you are an Additional Cardmember on your parents' AMEX card and you were under the impression that your Member Since year should be 2012 when you were added to their account.

From what I understand, they will no longer "backdate" your Member SInce year to their Member SInce year (lets pretend theirs is 1990), but you are correct in thinking that your Member Since year began the year you were added.

Please let us know the outcome of the phone call.

I had this same question and the amex rep confirmed that your card will backdate to the year you were added to someone else's amex, but no longer the year the other person opened said amex. Nevertheless, my card says member since 2013 but I am still assured by the CSRs it will report to 2012, so if it doesn't after the first statement cuts I will call Amex and have them correct it (their guarantee is noted by the CSR I spoke with to both my account and my parents so I don't think that will be a problem).
Sole Ownership Cards:
1st Financial Bank Platinum Student Visa, $500 CL, Open Since 3/2012
Citi Forward Student Visa, $6k CL, Open Since 10/2012
Costco TrueEarnings Amex, $6k CL, Backdates to 1/2012
SallieMae Rewards Barclay Mastercard, $2.5k CL, Open Since 4/2013
Jointly Owned Cards (co-owner with mom, not AU, used and paid only by me):
Chase Amazon Rewards Visa Signature, $2k CL, Open Since 8/2012
US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature, $13.5k CL, Open Since 10/2012
Authorized User (Parents Pay/Use)
Costco TrueEarnings Amex $29.4k CL, AU since 11/2012

Thanks for your replies, folks. My parents added me as an AU when they were approved anyway, so my member since date is the same as theirs regardless. I'll call when my first statement cuts to make sure my member since date reports properly.

Just log into your account. It should say "thank you for being a member since 2012".
