Getting a second card from Amex?

Postby jfi » Sat Feb 02, 2013 3:14 pm

Hey all, I just have a (few) quick question(s) here.

I applied back in July for a Delta Gold SkyMiles card and was declined (no income --> no wonder), then app'd again and was accepted back in December once I could report income (yay!). I've been paying off the balance dutifully and often, so that my average monthly spend is about 1.5x my CL (1k...). I'm approaching 61 days and considering two options: ask for a 3x CLI and/or apply for a new PRG.

From what I've read here so far, the CLI shouldn't interfere with my new app, but I'm concerned about something else that might. I've got a Visa from my college CU (8.9%, 4k) that has been sitting at 105% util for about 10 months (traveled over the summer, and my dad decided not to pay me back after all...). I will be able to PIF soon, but I'm worried that AMEX will use an old SP and decline me on the spot for massive util, even though I will definitely PIF the Visa before I app.

Can I ask AMEX to update their SP, then apply (by phone, or online), or do I just have to wait 30-45 days for it to auto-update, then apply?

Also... chances of my PRG app being approved once the new (good) SP is on file? :) (Util will be >10%).

Thanks!

In my experience, the approval for the PRG was pretty easy--I got approved after 2 other new accounts in the same month. I'm not sure how long your credit union takes to report after the statement closes, but it's probably safest to pay in full, let that statement close, wait a month, and then do the CLI and apply for the PRG.

I agree with smills228. You'll most likely be approved for a PRG at that point, provided you never pay late.

I recently applied for the delta gold and it was approved within 3 minutes. I have read that AMEX does soft pulls for those that were approved within 30 days so I applied for the basic blue today and delta a week ago. Did not get instant decision.

Got a please call so I did and wanted to make sure it wasn't a mistake. Status is "in-progress". Waiting for a reply on this one. The delta gold will be here in a week. So excited for those 30,000 bonus miles! Wanted the Blue for the 0% for a year.

First time dealing with amex so hoping the critics are right about customer service. My capital one (which i hate but is at 10%apr) is only still active cause it is my oldest. Credit line is been at 1500 since 2010. only have had one increase of 500 ever. They suck. Hope amex cli are better. Nick*
