I applied twice and was denied the first time. I was 19 during both applications and they were spaced like 4 months apart.

I had 7 years of solid credit, no late payments when I applied for my green card. It was $55 a year to carry it. I approved instantly. That was 1994, and the last time I carried a balance. It was my "debit" card before debit cards, and only gave me a temporary "spending limit" of what I could afford and pay. I actually have kept all my old AmEx cards, and I had my green card for 2 years before I upgraded to a standard gold card, which was $125 a year. Back then I didn't know what a credit score was, but I had Class A credit (told to me by American Express). I kept the Gold card until I met the profile for a Platinum. That took about ten years before I started getting offers in the mail.

Twice. Once, back in 1996. I was in college at the time and working part-time. A girl in one of my classes had a green card so I thought I'd give it a shot. I later found out she was just an AU on her Daddy's Amex account. Anyway, I was denied. Devastated, I spent the next 15 years "leaving home without it" because well, I didn't have it. I reapplied in 2011 and was approved. I now have the personal Gold card, Business Platinum card and the Delta Gold card. Life is good!
American Express: Business Platinum-NPSL, Delta SkyMiles Gold-$2K
Chase: Sapphire Preferred-$5K, Southwest Airlines Visa-$3.7K, Freedom-$400

Capital One: Platinum MC-$1.5K, Platinum MC-$750
