In 25 years, Amex has never turned me down. Some of it I attribute to just being in the right place at the right time. My first green card was when I was a senior on college in 1988 when they were actively courting the college market with that card. My first job a year later got me to Gold status. I asked for a PRG Gold about 2001 which despite my credit problems at the time, I never let it affect Amex and it was an easy change. Platinum came in 2009 when an application came in the mail and I jumped at the chance. The latest, a BCP card is due in the mail this week.

Applied again, this time for the PRG and was instantly approved.

May 2012, instantly approved for SPG
July 2012, denied for Gold (I think it was because I had too many new accounts)
March 2013, instantly approved for PRG.

26, 120 day late back in 2007, 30 day late in 2008. Perfect payment history since.

Currently I have an AMEX BCE (PC'd from SPG) backdated to 2008 and a BofA Cash Rewards with EMV. Total CL 9500.

I got in on my first try today! I received a mailer for the BCE a few days after applying with Chase, Citi, and Discover (approved all 3). Hadn't planned on applying yet but I figured it wouldn't hurt since the new credit hadn't reported yet (inquiries had). Took a chance and got the BCE with a $150 bonus!
$2500 First Hawaiian Bank (6/10)
$4500 CHASE Freedom (2/13)
$3500 Citi Forward (2/13)
$2000 Discover it (2/13)
$9600 AMEX BCE (3/13)
$10000 CHASE Sapphire Preferred (7/13)
$5000 CHASE Ink Plus (8/13)

I was fortunate enough to get it on my first try. For some dumb reason, I decided to go for it with 5 months of history and It told me I was not approved, but when I called and asked them, they said that there was no HP ever recorded from Credit file and it must have been a glitch. But yes, got in my first

Like others I was also very fortunate to receive my Gold card the first time around. I had gotten one of those offer in the mail and had waited to the last minute to apply and wasn't exactly expecting to get approved since I only had one credit card and had issues with my previous BoA credit card. Now it's funny cause now BoA is hitting me up now wanting me to have one of there credit cards again (fat chance in hell!!!).

Got sent one of the Gold pre-approval offers. Ignored it. Got sent another about 6 months later, and took it. Added a Platinum the following year. I'll probably drop the gold card this year and back date the Platinum.
