Yes and no. You have to remember... how much you have to spend with Amex to get those points in the first place. Also... Amex has deals with those vendors so merchandise is I'm sure attained at a discount by Amex.
Win-win for them. They get you to spend $$$ with them and give you back peanuts. Most of their cost and savings can be found elsewhere.
Lose MR and clients may leave in droves.
