Can you use an AMEX gift card in the UK?

Postby dudey » Thu Jan 03, 2013 3:51 am

Hi,

I received an AMEX gift card as a present from a relative in the US. Unfortunately the gift card is a US AMEX gift card, does anyone have any idea how this can be used in the UK?

I have tried it on Amazon, however Amazon only accepts UK cards. Presumably if I found a UK website that accepts US credit cards I would be able to use it?

I have spoken to the AMEX team, who initially advised me that it could be used and that the card would just be deducted with the exchange rate of £ to $.

Any ideas?

Thanks

no ideas here. If you found a Uk website that takes us credit cards , no you won't be able to use the Us american express gift card.
let's say for example I went to London on a vacation, I can use my credit cards but If I was given a gift card that I can't use.
it says it on the holder to be used in the US only.

no ideas of how to use it in the Uk. have you spoken to any of the account mgrs in the gift card department?

Maybe use it on the American Amazon site and pay for shipping? I've shopped on both Amazon UK and Amazon Canada to get stuff that wasn't available in the US. So it is possible to use other Amazon sites. Though I'd only do it as a last resort since the shipping fee will probably be fairly high.
AMEX: Blue Cash Preferred (6% on groceries, 3% gas & dept stores)
Capital One: Venture (2 points per $1, equivalent to 2%)
Chase: Freedom (rotating 5% categories), Disney Rewards (1 point per $1, Disney benefits)
US Bank: Cash+ (5% bookstores / 5% Electronic Stores)
