Need advice!

Postby Germanmuscle » Sun Dec 30, 2012 12:32 am

Im 19, a full time student, currently making 10,000 a year. I want to apply for Amex Gold Delta Skymiles, since I'm gonna be traveling a lot next year because I'm going out of state for school and intern. What are my chances of getting approved? or should I wait a year since I just got citi forward?

The only thing killing my score is 4-5 inquires in the past month and my longest credit history is only 9 months.

I would say very slim due to low scores, low income, and low credit history.

Traveling home from school during holidays is not considered traveling a lot. Besides, what do you do with your travel card when you are done with school?

Even if you consider traveling home from school frequent traveling, where is the nearest airport to your school and home? If these airports are major hubs for other airlines, it would not make sense to sign up for a Delta card as it will be more expensive to fly Delta.

Main Card: Amex Platinum
For gas: Penfed Platinum Cash Rewards
For travel & dining: Chase Sapphire Preferred

You may not be approved, but all you have to lose is an inquiry. If that doesn't bother you, I say go for it. The sooner you get in with Amex the better backdating will be for you in the long run. That's the REAL benefit of it and why the time matters.

You might get it with a cosigner.

I forgot to mention, I travel 8-10 times a semester. I also will be making somewhere around 30,000 as a intern. I was just wondering if I would get approved now. I probably just get a amex charge card and establish a history first instead of applying for delta sky miles.

But, what charge card would you guys think I have a better chance at getting?

You have the same chance with all the charge cards. It's not harder to get a Platinum than a Green, for example. Charge cards are easier to get from Amex than their credit cards, so starting there is a good idea. I'd apply for Green if I was you.
Amex Platinum
Amex BCP 21K
Amex SPG 5K
Barclaycard Arrival Plus WEMC 5K
Chase Sapphire Preferred 23.5K
Credit Union 10K
Discover IT 7.75K
