what's the low down on american express red card?

Postby KC95 » Tue Apr 29, 2008 11:36 pm

  • is it only avail in the UK?
  • any plans to bring it to the US?
  • is it higher than the black card?
  • 1% is donated to charity?
  • what charities does the money go to exactly?

I know the charity is HIV/AIDS related but I think the amount donated goes up to 1.25% or 1.5%. It's definitely not above the black American Express card. Anyone in the UK can get the Red card pretty much regardless of how much or how little you make.

What they should do is get rid of the green card since it has no prestige anymore and replace it with a real "green" card with rewards that go towards environmental causes. Being that anything "green" is hot right now, that would be popular for sure.

Current Cards:
American Express: Blue Cash, Simply Cash Bank of America: WorldPoints Platinum Plus Chase: Amazon, British Airways, Cash Plus Rewards, Freedom, Ink Cash Citi: Thank You Premier, Dividend Platinum Select Discover: More
Primary Everyday Card: American Express Blue Cash
Primary Travel Card: Chase Sapphire Preferred

That's a cool idea, having a real green card with environmental rewards. But that shouldn't be a part of the green/gold/platinum/black series because once people qualify for the higher cards they will stop supporting the environment.

I don't think that's true. The Amex Red card is all the rage in the UK and anyone can qualify it (it's like qualifying for a Green Card) yet Bono from U2 and the celebs love it. The card isn't about the prestige as much as it's the purpose. Think of it as a Prius. They're cheap compared to luxury cars yet the celebrities love them. Same thing here I think and yeah they should do that.

i think this whole green card thing is a nice idea but now would NOT be the time to do it. americans are struggling to make ends meat right now and most only use cards because they give discounts on gas and more. if you tell them to give their rewards to charity when they can't even afford food for themselves is not going to work you know. in the uk yeah it works because they have a govt that works. here we need to get the economy back on track before you can expect people to donate extra to charity.

The economy sucks but there's plenty of upper middle class people that are doing just fine thanks to their BUSH TAX CUTS while the average guy is struggling to pay the bills.

But yeah dude plenty of people would still do this today I think.

I agree, Bush or No Bush, Good or Bad Economy, Good or Bad Environment. You will always find people who take it however the question is just how many !
