Thin file after using a charge card under my parents account

Postby nicothegreeko » Sun Dec 02, 2012 10:53 am

Hi everyone. New member here. Not sure if I'm posting this in the right section.

I am trying to asses my credit situation. Credit Karma says I have a "thin file" and so do the websites of the credit bureaus I have checked with. My question is this, shouldn't using a charge card as an authorized user under my parents' AMEX account have built up some credit by now? I have been using this AMEX Gold card for over 5 years. In my credit reports I can see my payment history on the charge card. It's all there. But for some reason I still have no score.

I have searched around for an answer to my question and so far haven't found it. I've also tried to get help from AMEX and they give me a 1-800 number that I can never get to work.

Just FYI, I have never rented an apartment or applied for a loan. I'm trying to determine whether or not I should (or even can) get an actual credit card to start building up my credit if need be.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

amex and authorized users vs. joint users

you would need to be a joint/co-applicant for it to effect your an authorized user your chances of getting your own card will be enhanced. i know with amex it's confusing cause they request the ss# for the authorized user, but it doesn't seem to effect the score. also, if you decide to apply down the road you can have your membership since date, backdated to when you became an authorized user which will really help your score.
