Tbh, I don't think it would help much. It may show you are responsible and later on the road they might give you a chance, but seeing as your credit is not that great it might be a little while until Amex will consider you. I just got approved for the Amex Gold, and I just let my credit grow for 6-7 months and then applied for cards I want the most and see where it went. I don't think it will help much but they might pre-approve you down the road depending on how you use it.
