Can you change American Express cards?

Postby Itsally1011 » Thu Nov 01, 2012 8:00 am

Hi everyone!

I got an Amex gold card 2 months ago and I regret the decision. The rewards are just not wowing me like I thought they would....should have done more research. Could I change it to the Starwood preferred guest card? How would this affect my credit? I would love to upgrade to the platinum but that annual fee makes me cringe.

You'd need to apply for the Starwood preferred guest card, then cancel your gold card separately. I don't think it will affect your credit much. Probably just a few points but if you pay on time you'll get those points back in a few months.
Amex Platinum
Amex BCP 21K
Amex SPG 5K
Barclaycard Arrival Plus WEMC 5K
Chase Sapphire Preferred 23.5K
Credit Union 10K
Discover IT 7.75K

are talking about apples and oranges here. You can't change from a charge card (your gold card) to a revolving CREDIT card (SPG). You would have apply for the SPG.

If your gold card isn't getting the benefits you expected, then maybe upgrade to the gold PRG(assuming you have the regular gold)? Of course you'd have to wait 13 months before you can upgrade because of the CARD act which prohibits you to do so.

If you have a current Amex card, say green or gold, and you want to upgrade to SPG and you meet the 13 month wait per the recent CARD Act, will Amex do a hard credit file inquiry on you once you apply? Or is it a soft pull?

American Express: Business Platinum-NPSL, Delta SkyMiles Gold-$2K
Chase: Sapphire Preferred-$5K, Southwest Airlines Visa-$3.7K, Freedom-$400

Barclays: Financing Visa-$3.2K, Juniper MC-$1.1K
Capital One: Platinum MC-$1.5K, Platinum MC-$750
CFNA: Firestone-$1.6K
CitiBank: Office Depot Business Card-$1K

They won't upgrade you period for a Amex charge to an Amex revolver (like the Starwood), or vice versa. However, once you are an Amex card member, they will only hard pull you for a new application if it's approved. A rejection will result in a soft pull, and this only applies to current Amex members.
