I just spent 2 1/2 weeks in Italy (Florence, Tuscany, Rome & Amalfi Coast) and used my Platinum Card almost exclusively, and did not stay at any "chain" hotels - although they were all upper tier / "Leading Hotels of the World" hotels. I think I wasn't able t to use the AMEX maybe 5-7 times during my whole trip.

That said, as I carry the Sapphire Preferred as well, it would be disingenuous to claim it isn't worth it ... it is. It has good partners for hotels, but I think AMEX points are better for airfare.
My Wallet:

AMEX Platinum - NPSL (obtained in 2012; Backdated to 1989)
AMEX Gold Business - NPSL (obtained 2006; Backdated to 1989)
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $30,000.00 (Obtained 2012)
Discover - $3,900.00 (Obtained 1994)
Bank of America - $5,000.00 (Obtained 2011)
Capital One - $7,500.00 (Obtained 2011)

I think if you compare Plat to just the CSP, the Plat is a clear winner.
But when you factor in the benefits of having a Freedom you basically have a CSP with 5% rotating categories, 2% travel and 1% everything else, plus the extra few points for the 10+10 on the Freedom, and the 20% bonus on redeeming UR points for travel. The Chase Trifecta becomes a pretty good setup. Then again you have to have multiple cards.

The biggest problem I see with the Plat is that other cards are increasing their benefits, and it's making people think about using multiple cards instead of the Plat.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

I called amex about the 20% bonus and they said is only for personal platinum cards, the business will still have it so I'm safe. I like the Chase Trifecta, but they declined my saphire application due to short credit history
Amex: Business Platinum (09/12) BCP $10,500 (03/13)
Visa: Capital One Journey $750 (04/11) Chase Freedom $1,800 (04/12)
MasterCard Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select $8,500 (05/13)
Discover: Discover It $2500 (07/11)
