Disappointed, Sync seems to be the replacement

Postby MOC » Tue Nov 13, 2012 12:38 am

It is kind of a disappointment that American Express would just start cutting things with no real explanation. They just revamped the Platinum card benefits last year, so I feel like their benefits were infringing on their margins. They have introduced the sync thing now which seems like a semi-replacement with discounts or statement credits by syncing with Facebook, X Box, Foursquare, or Twitter. I guess if they give you any benefits, they want you advertising for them which does not seem like something Platinum clientele would care for. The rewards mall thing was just poorly handled. The site still says it is down due to technical difficulties even though it has been that way for months so it is obviously not a temporary issue.

The other benefits are still great, but if I am going to try to use it as my primary card, I'd like to earn extra points which is not easy with the Platinum. It is still worth the fee for the lounge access, car rental , SPG, airline fee credit, etc. 2x points for travel booked through Amex travel is the only way to earn more than 1x points which just waters down everything you can get through the program. Obviously the travel benefits are great, but I just don't see the point in creating these convoluted opposing systems of rewards with nothing special for Platinum since Sync is available for every card. I get all the benefits just by paying $450 and I already qualified for the card so there is no incentive to spend any using that card when I can get more through Chase Ultimate Rewards. Do you see any reason to charge anything to the card with a 1% return other than the airline service fees which you get a $200 credit for?

That's stupid. There's no need to take down the old mall while a new one is in development.

As long as the travel benefits don't get cut I'm going to wait it out.

No foreign transaction fees is not the novelty it used to be, a good number of the high end cards come with this feature. Given the choice between an AMEX and a Chase Sapphire card (both with no foreign transaction fee though), the choice is pretty obvious to go with the Chase card given their greater versatility with their rewards points

Not to mention that your American Express will only be accepted at chain hotels and a rare few other places in Europe. For everything else you will need Visa. I will give American Express credit for giving you an awesome exchange rate at or below market. I just wish it was accepted everywhere like Visa. I tried to use my card at Karstadt and other places, but since it did not have a chip people do not know what to do with it. Amex should really step up it's game as other companies are cutting into their Platinum market. That nonsense about revamping is obviously what the customer reps are told to say. They could have built an entirely new website in this amount of time or left the old one up. I feel like they did a big push to get people to sign up and max out their benefits a while ago, but now they're just backpedaling and cutting.

Based on a preponderance of the news out lately, say the past year or two, I think AMEX is shifting focus to the lower end of the market. I say this based on their new partnership with Walmart, the near abandonment of Centurion cards, and other news. I can't really say I blame them but it's disappointing as a platinum cardholder.
