How and when to get Amex Centurion invitations?

Postby jc01501 » Mon Oct 22, 2012 9:39 am

I have been a member of American Express since 1973, and have given them lots of business, with substantial funds running through all my accounts.

I called American Express today to request an upgrade to the Centurion card. The representative was very nice, and notated on my account that I would like to be invited to Centurion membership.

I was curious when the invitations are mailed out typically?

Thanks!

This is the question many before you have asked and to one none of us can answer. Only Amex can answer this and this is what makes getting the Centurion card so mysterious. I for example never called them or asked for one. I 'wanted' one but just lived my life. Then it came in the mail. So YMMV but I think you have done all that you can.

Sorr I can't give you a better answer.

Thanks! I appreciate your reply.

I have my fingers crossed!

Have you been pleased with the Centurion card? Have you found it to be worth it?

Strange story... My friends parents have a costco amex. They put both of their kids (my friends) Ivy league college tuition on the card for 4-5 years each kid. Their yearly amex charges were around 300k. Got the centurion invite a few years ago...with a costco amex...lol awesome.

I've been pleased with my Cent card. The worth it question has been asked by many as well and to be honest, this is a difficult question to quantify as what is worth it to me may not be to others.

As for me, I am finding it very worth it.

My understanding is that each year when you renew your annual charges are put into a software program telling AMEX where and what you buy and how much. If you fit their model you are mailed an invitation. As many people know, a certain percentage of charges that are through AMEX travel and FHR are weighed heavily into the formula. I can run hundreds of thousands on my personal card for my business, such as advertising expenses, but it wouldn't necessarily qualify me for an invite.

so it would help to plan all my travel through the AMEX website? I travel quite a bit and charge to my platinum or delta, but i always use the airline websites or the big travel sites like expedia.

i also called to request a centurion last year and they said it would be "noted" on my account, whatever that means

I called today to ask about Centurion membership and was told the following:

- The Centurion is SO exclusive, no representative knows anything about its qualifications or requirements

- The first year now costs $10,000 ($7500 initiation + $2500 annual fee)

- It will be notated on my account that I would like to be considered for the card the next time they do reviews.

I think we are going to have to alter our spending. I'm guessing by all the marketng propaganda Amex gives to Centurion invitees, Centurion wants people who spend a lot for discretionary things, like shopping, travel, and hotel stays, not just business expenses.

This reminds me of an interview Oprah did with Chris Rock some years ago. Oprah asked him how his life had changed once he started making real money asking "What was it like to get your "black card?". Chris Rock turns to Oprah and says, "Black card!?!". What about you? Don't you carry the Krytonite Card or something?!?!"
