Odds of Amex Approval?

Postby rossmo » Sat Oct 13, 2012 10:16 pm

I want to add an Amex Charge Card to my wallet/portfolio (Gold Card, but open to suggestions). From what I have read, it looks good on your credit report (it would diversify credit portfolio). Also, I like the idea that I would be able to charge (almost) any amount in the event of an emergency...

Here's my recent history:
-9/4/12: Denied for Citi Forward Card. Hard inquiry on EX. Disputed a collection on my report and won. EX Score went from 631 to 679. Sent in updated report to Citi for reconsideration. Still denied.

-Disputed additional incorrect information on my report (and won, again!). EX Score went from 679 to 731! Sent in updated report to Citi for reconsideration and they did another Hard Inquiry (10/7/12). Denied again.

-1 recent "baddie." A public record (It was a late State Tax Payment) now listed as "Judgement Satisfied." Filed 2/12 and Resolved 4/12 (was for less than $400). (only appears on EX report).

-10/10/12: Applied/Approved for a Discover More card. (Did some research and turns out they pull EQ/TU 99% of the time. They pulled EQ - I live in NJ).

I now have 2 hard inquiries from Citi (september/october), and 1 hard inquiry (and new account) on EQ from Discover. From my research, it looks like Amex pulls from EX (again, I live in NJ). My Up-to-date Credit Card Balances/Fico Scores in my signature below.

So, knowing this information/recent history, what are the odds I will be approved for the Amex Gold card if I apply now? How about any other Amex card? If not, how long should I wait before applying?

Thanks for any/all advice!
Credit Union Visa: $5000 (4/11)
Discover IT $1750 (10/12)
Chase Freedom $1500 (3/13)
BofA Credit Card: $18.7k (1/02) (Authorized User)
Secured CapOne Visa: $300 (5/12)
Banana Republic Store: $1200 (5/11)
Express Next A-List: $1340 (6/11)

FICOS (as of 3/15/12):
EQ 762
EX 731
TU 747

Your scores are good enough to be approved for an Amex card. They may ask you about income/make sure you aren't a dependant. With so much recent activity I'd probably wait a few months before applying to be on the safe side, but I'm not sure it's really necessary. In my opinion, for another $50 a year, the premier rewards gold is a much more rewarding card than the standard gold. If you aren't going to be using the charge card much, save yourself the higher annual fee and apply for a green. I would think that you'd most likely be approved. Before making an abnormally large charge out of the ordinary from your normal spending habits, it's best to call or check through their website to see if they'll approve the charge before attempting it. just fyi.

i recently got a BCE with hard pulls for diff credit cards in the past two months for other cards. I had previous history though... I would suggest you wait till january so that you can maximize your AAoA with any future Amex cards and give a bit of a buffer between your recent hard pulls.

Wouldn't it be better if he applied in December? That way, any future cards will show up as 2012, not 2013.

yeah, but having 12/12 doesnt help much more than 1/13. What he would really need to do to boost AAoA is get a card by the end of december this year, then i 2014 get another card in january. It would backdate to 1/12 I'm pretty sure and maximize his account age and backdating with all other amex cards

Yes, first time with Amex ideal would be December or late in the year then every Amex card after that January to maximize AAoA. I also am hoping to get a PRG, I will be applying next week to see what happens!

Good thoughts on the backdating. Thanks!

If CitiBank wouldn't approve me for the CitiForward Card, why is Amex likely to approve me for a Gold (PRG)? What would be my odds of getting approved for the Blue Cash or SPG cards?

You have more chance getting PRG vs Citi Fwd, because fwd is a credit card not a charge card. Same deal with AMX credit card vs their charge card. For example, one might be approved for PRG, but not BCE, which have higher restriction vs charge cards.
