The Zync is dead. Long live the Zync!

Postby BDBlue » Mon Oct 01, 2012 8:08 pm

So, I was browsing the cards on americanexpress.com, and I noticed the Zync was conspicuously absent. With some googling, I found the page on americanexpress.com that has info on the Zync and a link to apply, but when you try to apply, it says the product you're applying for is no longer available.

Does this mean the Zync is dead?

People have been buzzing about this on MyFICO as well. I asked the AMEX Twitter team this afternoon and they state that the Zync is still available and that they would let the proper department know that people cannot see/apply for Zync.

Who knows what is true...odd that only one card would suddenly disappear. I just wonder if they are making some changes and accidently removed the card. When they discontinued Optima it still showed up on their website for several months later as a page showing current cardholders what their benefits were. I guess we will see....

I know AMEX lost a big lawsuit on monday. It was against discrimination on their clients age and other stuff. Zync is targeted at a younger crowd.

Someone posted on another credit forum that they called AMEX to apply for Zync and were told that the program was terminated as of yesterday. Glad I got mine when I did!

I know it's too late to apply but what is the draw for this card? Loads of people are expressing their dissapointment the card is no longer available BUT I am doubting if this has anything to do with the card actually being any good OR this is just a reaction because something is no longer available.....

Fast- I was going to apply because I was hoping to get in with Amex either in December (when I would have applied) or next April. That was it really and just build history with them. I really don't know what I would I qualify for now, since I thought it was the easiest card to get from AMEX. But my income has gone up this year quite a bit so it would have made sense to apply. But it's too late for that now.......and I think it was the latter reason is what I'm disappointed about.....

For me it was the backdating with a minimal annual fee. I have absolutely no use for Green, Gold or Platinum as I like to chase cash back on my Bank of America, Chase and Discover. I opened my ZYNC in January 2012 and it reports opened January 1999. Worth every penny of the $25 annual fee for 13 years added to my AAoA.

I think for many people they were waiting to apply and they are upset that they missed their opportunity. Others, who may already have the account like me, are worried what AMEX is going to do with our cards. AMEX rarely allows discontinued cards to remain in circulation. They replaced the IN:NYC, IN:LA and IN:Chicago cards with Blue; I'm not sure what happened to holders of The One Card (a charge card) and Optima has been systematically replaced with Blue. Discontinuation of a charge card (with the exception of One) is unprecidented. I bet that we will probably be allowed to keep our ZYNC's for another year or two and then we will be told to upgrade or have the account closed.

I really wouldn't worry. ZYNC was the easiest to be qualified for if you were borderline, but pretty much all of the charge cards (obviously not Centurian) are fairly easy to qualify for. As long as you have a decent annual income and decent credit with no recent baddies. The only bummer is the annual fee for Green is $70 more than ZYNC. But if that does not bother you, you should have no trouble with Green, Gold or PRG.
