Clawing my way to Platinum

Postby PlatinumSmartie » Tue Sep 25, 2012 11:15 pm

Hello, I'm new to the site but based on people's stories I found the determination to survive mine. So I thought I would share!

At 27 years old with 11 years of credit history (was a cosigner and actually had credit) I was sitting and talking with a good friend who had an AMEX Platinum card. As he listed the benefits and privileges I found myself drooling with desire to be one of the (somewhat) elite. So a week later I had him send me the referral link for 50k MBRs and after quickly applying was equally as fast declined. I was shocked! I had two years of history with AMEX on my Delta card and never had a late in my life. So I called and asked for Recon and 5 days later was declined. I had never been declined for credit in my life (though I do admit that I've made some mistakes and had much higher balances than I was comfortable with on my credit cards which dropped me to 680).

After receiving my letter they indicated that internally they didn't like my ratio of payments to my balance...well that was easily fixed. I paid off the credit card along with two others and started making payments every other day for daily purchases. To me this should've been easy since I was wanting to pay $450 to have a card that I was promising never to carry a balance on. So as I'm making my payment (two weeks after my last decline) I get a notice that I'm pre-approved! OMG! WINNING! So I applied...and was declined again for the same reason, I tried once again to talk to the recon line and plead my case. For the record: They seem pretty much useless, they just say that it will get looked at and listen to your story they seem unable to do anything besides listen to your desires.

Disheartened I decided it would become a goal for my birthday in March. Low an behold after I had completely given up an email comes....CONGRATULATIONS! I don't know what exactly was the final trigger but I am more than glad to say that I am now a proud card member and I'll be frantically checking my mail the next couple of days. Moral: If you really want it try try and try again...and if you already have a card be thankful it's soft credit hits (confirmed).

Congrats man. I am anxiously waiting till I have had my PRG for a year so I may too upgrade to platinum. I had my pick of the gold, prg, and platinum when i called...and initially the AF scared me away from the platinum. Now that I want it, i have to wait lol.

I hear you! The way I was able to justify the fee to myself was that my friend referred me (50k pts with 3k in 3mo) and I have 3 flights for sure that I'm taking within the next 12 months. SO! Even though I have my Delta Gold I'm not going to have to worry about baggage fees for my friends traveling with me now ($200 credit will be used), and the cost of the card alone for the year was balanced by the points. The second year will be a little bit tougher but I think I'll find ways to make use of it. I've already registered now for Global Entry even though I've only left the country on a boat before, but TSA PreCheck would be helpful. I'll be the first to admit I'm not the avid traveler that this is originally designed for, but my friend did an excellent sales job and it feels awfully awesome to have :) .

Remember decisions are made by emotion first and justified after :)
