American Express Complaints: They Burned Me!

Postby tn-amex » Wed Sep 19, 2012 3:49 pm

Here is the situation....

About 1 yr ago I received my first Amex Zync (never had CC or any other thing on credit). I was originally told that I could up grade the Card to the Green (not True) and that I would be able to have the credit limit taken off after a 6 months.

Here is what recently happened..... Called and asked about the credit limit and was told that they review the account every 30 days and that they see that I spend over that amount but make multiple payments and such. That they will do another review and will see if they will left the limit here shortly. I was told that I can not up grade that card, whatever, but that I can always apply for a new Green card.

I said fine, let's apply for the new card and I will worry about the other later. Applied declined bc I have a Zync with a Limit!!!! WTF!!!! New credit check on my history....GREAT!!

Called back and the Rep told me that they should have told me that I should have cancelled the card before applying. I am not happy.....Anyone else heard of this??

Thanks for the help

That's too bad. I recently had a bad experience too.

New to the card and was moving so had expenses related to that I called a representative to figure out timing of billing statements, to help coordinate with my move and first paycheck with the new job. I called and asked what day was the last day on a billing statement and he explained to me that it was midnight of a certain date.

To clarify I asked between which two days the midnight laid between. He ended up giving me the wrong information by 24 hours. He said if I made purchases on a certain day I would 100% be in the clear for the next billing statement. I made the purchases on the day he said I would be 100% in the clear but that was wrong. The result was that I had around $700 of charges on a billing statement a month earlier than I anticipated.

Ultimately I guess it's my responsibility but it is frustrating when you are given the wrong information. I will be able to make the payment, but it does provide a major inconvenience.

Other than this though I have absolutely loved my card. Once I get more familiar with everything there should not be any issues. I have called other times and they have been extremely helpful as well

Their customer service is hit or miss. Sometimes you get someone who is great and does a fantastic job. Other times they dont know about upgrades, past rewards, etc. and that gets irritating.

It's a shame that they even offer Zync with a limit. They are watering down the once prestigous Amex brand.

Having said that, yes, that does bite that you were not told before hand that the Zync needed to be closed. The good news is that you did not get a hard inquiry for the declined account.

i totally agree. It is a charge card first and foremost, not only does it lower the value of the card but by having a limit it creates the deception that you can spend as much as you want. I dont blame Amex for adopting the policy to allow people who may not have otherwise been accepted into cardmembership. But i wish they would make a whole different card for such introductory cases to avoid any smudging of its prestige

Isnt the zinc already like that? It was my understanding that its the easiest charge card to get from amex.

nope, second easiest behind Delta Gold Sky Miles. I was referring to the Zync throughout my post, sorry if that was unclear.
