Acceptance in Los Angeles?

Postby fantasy86dj » Sun Sep 16, 2012 1:06 am

Hi All,

I am hoping to have a holiday August next year to Los Angeles, hopefully to stay in the Western side of town, just wondering what American Express acceptance is like over there? I imagine that I should take my Visa as a backup?

I don't know about Los Angeles in particular but isn't a Visa or MC backup always required with an Amex :P

Here I can leave my Mastercard and Visa home on my working week and just live off the AMEX. My supermarkets near home and work both accept AMEX, if I go to my fav nightclub again its out with the AMEX - I have not used my Mastercard for a month!

Thanks for your input :)

You shouldn't have trouble with AMEX, but bring Visa/MC as backup just in case.

AMEX isn't accepted in most small businesses and fast food, other than that you are good to go.

Indeed, I got some revenge down here in the UK. I was in a Café with my two kids and ordering drinks and they had the American Express logo up, The person in front of me then went to pay via Amex and they said they stopped taking 6 months ago (Bearing in mind they still had Amex logo up) and he left all the stuff they had made and left. I then thought I'd get a bit of revenge and ordered 4 coffees and two chocolate muffins waited till I went to pay, dipped the chip into the card machine and then they say they no longer take Amex and I walk away leaving everything on the top. I get the feeling that it was a very expensive decision too not accept Amex :P (Someone behind me walked away just after me when he heard they don't take as well). Us UK amex users don't like being poached lol

I'm actually in LA, so in the vast majority of the places I go (eat, movies, etc) Amex is always taken. My buddy always carries an Amex gold (he's an AU) discover more card and a citi forward. So that way he's always ready for a place that only accepts visa/mc. There are only a few that don't take Amex but the vast majority of the places here do Amex. But I've always heard that Amex charges some of the higher fees when one of there cards are swiped.

This is very true (AMEX on average charges 1% higher than other three), which is why many small businesses and fast food don't take them.
