At major supermarkets and petrol stations
For all kinds of entertainment and eating out
With high street names and local gems."

Nah you'll be fine, some places can't process Amex through chip as well, I have been to small shops, where they've upgraded the software to take Amex but not the chip reader, so they just swipe it through anyway (And thats with a chiped UK card).

To find the swiper, it will either be on the top of the pin machine, or on the side. Some shops don't actually have them on the chip and pin machine, if they don't just ask them to swipe it through on their machine where they would swipe through a loyalty card or their own staff card.
