Are you asked for an ID?

Postby PlatinumAMEX94 » Thu Aug 16, 2012 7:14 pm

Are you asked for a drivers license or other form of ID when making a purchase? If so, what card is it, and what were you purchasing at the time?

I have noticed when I use my American Express Platinum, id is required. When I use my Chase Explorer Visa, no id asked. This has been pretty consistent for me.

the only time I get asked for an ID is when I buy food from a drive thru from this chinese/fast food restaurant. I don't remember ever being carded from any other place no matter which card I use.

I was ID'ed at Best Buy when I bought my new computer tower last week. Used my BofA Accelerated Cash Rewards Amex. Of note: while I am not ID'ed at Walmart with this card, they do always ask for the billing ZIP Code. When I use my BofA Cash Rewards Visa Signature at Walmart I am not asked for the ZIP Code. Same bank, different networks.....go figure.

No ID, occasionally my billing zip code is asked for. Maybe it is used for marketing rather than AVS. Maybe both.

If your card is unsigned a cashier can request ID. However, from what I have read, it is against their merchant-store agreement to refuse to follow through with a sale if they request any form of ID and it is not given. Therefore, if I am ever requested ID (which as been done twice once at a wawa and once at a marshalls) I refuse. If they say they won't process without ID, I tell them to cancel the sale, have their store manager contact their headquarters to familiarize themselves with their merchant agreements, and walk out. Yeah, maybe it is a little harsh on my end, but I do not want people to know my address (not that it isn't public information) but it is the principal of disclosing personal information to someone who is, in my opinion, not entitled to it.

Where I work we ask for zip codes because the company wants to know if they need to build a new store in a certain area if a lot of our customers are coming from a place that is far away to get stuff.

I so the same thing. It is against the merchant agreements to ask.
