Why does AMEX always check your 4506-T form? Is that address verification?

Postby zhuxuhermes » Wed Aug 15, 2012 11:33 am

I applied for blue cash everyday and they request to pull my tax report (4506-T form) to further process my application.

From the application status page, they need to verify my home address info, but I think 4506-T form is related to tax return, so I think AMEX might also check my income source, which is supposed to be cinfidential. Why does AMEX do that?

Why don't they trust the FICO socres?

What did you put as your employer and reported income and title? Those things make a difference. Everything you put on your application puts your application on a matrix/grid. If something is amiss then further verification is required. i.e. a real person is going to investigate your app. Income is required for all applications.

I put my income and employer info as they truly are ... it's just that the verification process is a pain

4506-T authorizes someone to receive copies of your tax returns. Any information on the returns is fair play - from address to income verification. I suggest calling their underwriter line and offering another form of address verification, like a utility bill. 866-379-3643 for new accounts, 877-399-3083 for existing.

They usually don't ask unless they are doing a financial review. Did you cancel a card in past when they asked to do financial review? Otherwise, you triggered some verification issue.

Amex has every right to request a 4506-T, and you have every right to tell them no.

As far as I'm concerned a tax return is between a person and the IRS, and if any of my credit card issuers asked for one I would most certainly decline.
