PRG to platinum advice

Postby jlam572 » Thu Aug 09, 2012 9:36 pm

So as some of you may know, I just got my gold card a month ago and Im happy with it, but Im having some issues thats making me kind of have remorse for not getting the platinum when they offered it to me when i called to upgrade to gold.

1) I never shop for groceries...my job provides me a free house, free electricity, and free meals.
2) I hardly ever pump gas..I fly back home from work every 6-9 days or so, and even then i only pump gas maybe every 3 months on my car and every 1 month on my motorcycles. At work I have a company car with free gas.
3) I have 3 big trips planned for the next 12 months. One back to california to visit my folks for christmas, hong kong in may, and vegas in september.

2 questions. Could I take their offer for the platinum before my flight in december? Or is there a minimum amount of time between upgrades?

Has anyone used the companion tickets before? How did it work out for you? Business class and first only right?

I figure with the airport lounges and airline fees alone it would cover the annual fee increase, even without factoring in reward points. Thanks

Its an extra 200 bucks or so for a platinum

I think you have to wait at least 13 months to convert due to Federal regulations. I noticed, though, how you said you fly a lot. Is it enough to take full advantage of the PRG's 3x airfare multiplier?

It stinks because I fly on a charter airline here in hawaii. Cant be booked through amex travel, although they do take amex thank god. I wish they would convert it to 3x points because last month alone I flew 9 times :( . I did just book my cali flight the other day, and I got 3x rewards for it after my billing cycle is done.

Yeesh....

If you cannot take advantage of any of the PRG's multipliers, I see no reason why not upgrading to Platinum. Too bad for the CARD act...

Its actually a state funded department of health job so Im in healthcare too lol. Im in charge of a facility, but non-administrative work. We have a hospital administrator for that bs lol. The perks are nuts including travel compensation as well since I live on a different hawaiian island. However, like others have said...working for someone else doesnt make you rich. Im planning on other ventures next year, not sure if I will stay here too or not. What is it that you do hematino?

It is a conundrum with AMEX

When I first applied 2 months ago I had a philosophical discussion with the CSR who took my application about the 2 cards. It seems that the Gold Premier Rewards card is great for preparing to travel (building up points for miles) but then, once you want to use them, you are much better off with the Platinum card.

I chose to just get the Platinum card.

If you decide to upgrade, let me know, I will happily refer you.
My Wallet:

AMEX Platinum - NPSL (obtained in 2012; Backdated to 1989)
AMEX Gold Business - NPSL (obtained 2006; Backdated to 1989)
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $30,000.00 (Obtained 2012)
Discover - $3,900.00 (Obtained 1994)
Bank of America - $5,000.00 (Obtained 2011)
Capital One - $7,500.00 (Obtained 2011)

I said that last night lol
God I wish I had a job in Hawaii.... One of my colleague's fiance used to live next door to Jack Johnson in Hawaii and she said it was the coolest thing ever. He would invite friends and neighbors to his back yard every week to just hang out and jam along.

Main Card: Amex Platinum
For gas: Penfed Platinum Cash Rewards
For travel & dining: Chase Sapphire Preferred

Haha yes it was you that i was paraphrasing. Small world, my friend lives directly across the street from jack johnson in haliewa. I actually heard him scream "shut the **** up!" at my friends dogs that were barking at 1am on a weeknight lol.

That's cool man, sounds like they take care of you and great perks! I work in an emergency room. There are things I see and deal with every day that a lot of people wouldn't even dream of. Funny thing is less than half the patients we see actually need to be there. I'm kind of tired dealing with drug seekers and bulls****ers and those kind of things, I've been thinking about just getting my master's degree so I can be a technologist or something down in the basement lab where the pay is better and I don't have to deal with patients face to face. I work with a generally great group of people though and they make it fun. Ehh, the grass is always greener on the other side, and all that, haha.
