Zync to Gold (or Gold Premier Rewards)

Postby SignHere » Tue Aug 07, 2012 9:04 am

I am trying to understand the process of going from Zync to Gold. I acquired my Zync card about 2 years ago (2 years in October) just getting out of college. It was an easy process and after verifying information I was approved. I have never been one to get a ton of credit card pre-approvals and such in the mail, so I really did not know where I stood.

I love my Zync card as I charge everything I possibly can to it, but considering I at least put $1,000 per month on just groceries and gas I wanted to try and get the Premier Rewards to get the double points on it. Typically I charge 2k to 2.5k a month but have gone up to 8k per month with no issues. I have accumulated around 85,000 points (I know these are express points and not the normal rewards points) so I wanted them to convert over to the more valuable points... catch my drift? I'd rather be able to use my points in their more valuable state than there less valuable state.

Now, from what I have read, some say that it can be upgraded and others say that it has to be applied for. My credit scores are in the 715 range and going up (paying off student debt), 7 year credit history, and currently the Zync in my only card (it's really all I need from my perspective). With the amount I charge per month and my current scores, I personally think I've 'outgrown' the Zync and have established a strong enough relationship with AMEX. Do you think it is probable that I would be approved for the Premier Rewards and if so, is it upgradeable or is it something I would have to apply for?

Thanks all for the help, reading this forum 2 years ago made my apply for my Zync!

I got impatient and pulled the trigger anyway. As it turns out I was approved instantly and will be receiving my cards expedited within 2-3 days. We do travel a couple times a year so I am glad I will now be able to convert these points that I have accumulated into miles! I thought twice about before hitting "apply" to going back and trying for the platinum. But, I don't think I would utilize its features as much as the Premier Rewards Gold (especially with the groceries/gas getting doubled). The only plus for me would have been the airport lounges, but I really do not travel enough and buying the 5 dollar bottle of water before a flight (vs getting it free) would have been cheaper than the 2 x platinum annual fees I would have had to pay out!

Unfortunately, ZYNC cannot be upgraded. You need to apply for a new Gold Card account which would allow you to get the sign up bonus. Keep ZYNC active through the whole process and once you have your new account, your points will be pooled together and will all be at the higher tier. I've kept my ZYNC even after getting the higher card since there are some bonus points that only ZYNC gets.

This moderator to approve posts is kind of annoying. Anyhow, you will see that I went for it and applied for the PRG card and got approved. Unfortunately, I am not eligible for the 25,000 bonus points:

"Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product within the last 12 months or any other Consumer ZYNC®, Green or Gold Card or Platinum Card® account within the last 90 days."

But, that's okay.

***RESPONSE BY MOD: THAT'S BECAUSE OF ALL THE SPAM - LESS THAN HALF THE POSTS ARE FROM LEGIT POSTERS. AND ONLY BRAND NEW MEMBERS ARE MODERATED.

I app'd and got approved for PRG. Glad to be getting the 2x on groceries and gas! Now, how long should I keep the Zync's open? Until after the billing cycle?

And, unfortunately, I am not eligible for the bonus sign up because they have some rule about having a previous charge account within 90 days from app'ing makes you ineligible.

Sorry to ask the question again, but I figured someone missed it. Now that I have the PRG, when should I cancel the Zync account? Or, does it make sense to keep it open (at only $25/yr)? Also, does anyone have an idea of when the MR express points convert to MR? They are still showing I am enrolled in MR express. I was thinking it is probably because I still have the Zync open.

Once you activate your PRG it should be automatically converted. You can always call and ask for sure. Sometimes the website it whacky. I would wait at least until you know for sure when the points convert before you cancel. If you are ok with the AF, I would just keep it open so the history is on your report.

I would just cancel once you are sure points have converted. Closed Zync will stay on credit report for at least 10 years. With AMEX backdating, getting new AMEXs is not only not painful, it can be down right helpful.
