How long do pending credit card transactions take?!

Postby KingVicc » Thu Aug 02, 2012 3:05 pm

I added an additional user to my account with a spending limit of $200. They tried to make a $66 purchase, but it didn't go through (they were entering the wrong zip code). They tried it twice before giving up. All said, they now have a total of $132 of pending charges, for canceled orders.

It's been 5 days, and the pending charges still show up, and she can't really buy anything since she already used around $50 on other stuff (leaving her with like $18 of spending). I know I can increase her limit, but I rather not. However, my real question is... has anyone had experiences with pending charges & canceled orders? I called AMEX but they said it was up to the merchant, and the merchant said three days and that they couldn't do anything else. It's been 5 and they aren't really being helpful. Couldn't they cancel the order if they wanted to?

Does AMEX's pending charges take longer to process? Thanks!

Give it a day or two and it will drop off. The "three days" probably meant business days.
American Express: Blue Cash Preferred (groceries, 6%; gas, department store, 3%); Gold Delta SkyMiles (Delta Air Lines, 2 miles/dollar, free checked bag).
US Bank: Cash+ (utilities, phone, internet, restaurant, 5%; drugstores, 2%).
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (everything, 2%); Fidelity Visa (everything, 1.5%).
Chase: Freedom (rotating, 5%); Amazon (, 3%); PriorityClub (IHG hotels, 5 points/dollar); Sapphire (not in use).

*All cards are registered with PriorityClub IDine program for 8 points/dollar at participating restaurants.

I've seen authorization remain on the card for as long as 10 days.
