Just got Gold

Postby jlam572 » Wed Aug 01, 2012 12:21 am

Hello there. New member here. Just upgraded from my green amex to gold preferred rewards. Ive been an amex member since 2010 and its been a mixed emotions kind of relationship with them. Right after getting my green I immediately started using it for points, I racked up about $1500 the first month and amex put a limit on my card. I called and spoke to customer service and they basically said that I could pay the balance early and they would unlock the card again. I will admit I was a little irked because I didnt see the point.

I just used my visa for the rest of the month and paid off my amex balance in full at the end of the month. I continued using my amex whenever i could just for regular purchases and never reached my limit again...the other day I checked my spending ability and its significantly higher. Ill never use it to buy a new mercedes, but its nice to know that I could. I love them now, love their customer service, they offered me platinum when I last called but stuck with gold because I dont travel outside of hawaii enough yet. The card keeps my spending within my means. I now find myself only going to businesses that take the card...everything else is just uncivilized.

When you upgraded your Green to PRG did they offer you any bonus points? My first year under the Green will end in a few months and I've thought about upgrading to the PRG once my 13 months is up. However I think I'll hold off until they offer me some sort of bonus. Ive heardthey do that from time to time.

Unfortunately no I didnt qualify because I was already an existing Amex customer :( but yeah, if they do have a bonus for existing cardmembers Id wait for it. Ill probably do that if they ever have a program for the platinum.

Edit: If I were you, I would call and see if you could get some kind of bonus for upgrading. The girl I was talking to at amex was pushing for me to get a platinum...but its not really cost-effective for me right now. I think they must get some kind of commision for signing people up for upgrades, in which case they might be flexible.

Congratulations on your upgrade. I would have been a little irked as well about paying the AMEX off early before you could have racked up more charges but that is the wonderful world of AMEX. From what my friends tell me here in Australia about AMEX is that they had to use other cards as well for the first month - once you travel more out of HI the higher cards would come into a world of their own.
