Which credit card company is best?

Postby outlaw » Mon Jul 30, 2012 11:08 am

Which credit card company is accepted at more locations? Many say that Visa and Mastercard are bigger than everyone and almost everyone accepts their cards. Some say Amex charges merchants a very high fee. Which one is the best to pick ?

If you are talking just about acceptance, then Visa and Mastercard are top dog. Amex and Discover lag behind. I've had places around here that don't take Amex. Some also don't take Discover. I've never seen a place yet that didn't take Mastercard and Visa (if they take one 99% of the time they take the other).

So just on the criteria yeah you would want Mastercard or Visa. (Or maybe both).

As to which is "best" overall that's a whole other debate. They all have their positives and negatives really. if you have one of each you should be set.

As mentioned VISA and MC are the most accepted. I been to restaurants that only take Amex. I assume that by only accepting Amex it would increase their cash business.

I'd go with Visa, followed by MC, Discover and Amex in that order.

Yes thank you I agree with all of you. And I take that you all know what you are talking since you are centurion card holders .

For me it's AMEX, hands down. However it depends what you care about. Customer service for AMEX is unmatched and that is the most important thing to me.

If I could only carry one form of payment and it had to be one credit card, meaning no cash or debit cards, then I would pick Visa just based on acceptance. What I do is carry only my AMEX and my debit card, which is a visa card, and use that only when AMEX isn't accepted.

I travel a lot for work and for pleasure and I swipe my card 4-5 times daily and only about twice a month do I get people who don't accept AMEX. It's annoying but it's not even close to as big as a deal that people make it out to me. I will gladly trade a few non-AMEX swipes on month for superior customer service.

Amen to that. I could not have said it better myself.

My vote would be for Amex.

The customer service is very useful. Whenever there is an issue such an over billing, billed twice, wrong item, etc. they always cover it immediately until the investigation is complete.

For those against the annual fees, I don't spend significant sums on a monthly basis yet I've still gotten multiples more than the annual fee back already this year.

I have no issues with acceptance. It's very rare I find a place that doesn't take Amex.

I have never had these experiences with Visa or Mastercard.

To those praising Amex customer service, how often do you need to use it? I've had a Mastercard (American Aadvantage affinity card) since 1994, and I've had to contact customer service just a handful of times, mostly to dispute an item when a merchant was being uncooperative.

I've also had the card blocked a few times after unusual spending patterns, but it gets reactivated after a quick call.

I haven't had many problems with Amex acceptance in the USA, but in Europe, Amex doesn't seem to be very popular. None of the hotels I'm going to next month accept it, for example (London, Frankfurt and Berlin).
