19 year old gold delta amex success story

Postby tigerhunt2011 » Wed Jul 25, 2012 12:18 am

So I am excited out of my mind to finally get my foot in the door with American Express! I applied and just got approved for the Gold Delta Skymiles Card since I LOVE Delta and have alot of Skymiles (37,000). I'm posting this to give any other young professionals/AMEX lovers tips on how to build credit and get your foot in the door.

Since I turned 18 (I'm 19 now) I've wanted my own AMEX because of the amazing customer benefits and service. I turned 18 January of 2011. Stupidly, I applied for like 5 different AMEX cards at once, and applied every month until May, denials abound. In June, I applied for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature card with Bank of America cause i bank with them. Due to ZERO credit history and a lot of inquiries, they offered me the classic Alaska Airlines VISA (the most basic one available). Secured, with a $500 limit. Not much, BUT it was a credit card so I was happy. When I went off to college in August 2011, my dad put me on his AMEX Account so I had my own AMEX Business Platinum but it was only the additional "Employee Card" which doesn't report to the bureaus in my name. (By the way, LOVE the Platinum. the $450 ann fee is worth EVERY penny! I would pay more!) I applied for a personal loan in November 2011, and was denied. Applied again for AMEX in December 2011, denied. In January, I was shopping at Express for my birthday and decided to apply for their store card to increase my total available credit and was APPROVED with a $250 CL. So my total avail credit now was $750. NO inquiries between January and the time I applied for the Gold Delta Skymiles AMEX tonight (7/24). Before applying, my Equifax FICO was 692 with about 16 inquiries across all 3 bureaus.I applied and got the dreaded "Application Under Review" screen. Thought I was done. Just for fun, I went to the "Check Application Status" site by AMEX. Basically you have to google "american express check application status" and it is the first link that comes up. Enter your SS and Zip code. I was delighted to see i saw "Approved!"

RULE #1~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-I paid the balance on both the Express card AND the AA Visa in full every month AND I NEVER let either card report with more than 35% utilization.

I am genuinely interested to see what my CL will be but it could be $50 and I would be happy because i LOVE AMEX and I am so excited to be a part of the family!
