Something to be aware of if you've had any past issues with Amex

Postby MemberSince99 » Fri Jul 20, 2012 6:40 am

I just read (on another forum) about some people getting Amex cards after past delinquent accounts, and then being denied for CLIs. I find this interesting as I was able to get a few cards from Amex after past delinquent accounts, then all of a sudden out of nowhere saw kind of the same thing.

Seems like based on my experiences and what I'm reading of others, if you've been delinquent in the past with them and manage to get back in, Amex still hasn't forgotten (or obviously forgiven) and you may see it up pop up in various ways. You're not home free just because you got back in.

I wonder if you paid the old charge off if you'd see the same thing from them. I suspect you probably will forever in their eyes be a pariah to some degree.

But it is strange as they kind of do things backwards - they approve charges over your "customary" spending THEN FR you, and they approve you for cards after a CO THEN deny you a CLI based on the CO.

I'm actually surprised they are even giving people that screwed them over a second chance. They used to be a lot more strict. They are kind of watering down their elite status in the card world.

But yes, why would they give someone a new account but then decline CLI's?

Probably because they are still making $$$ off the cardholder BUT they are also limiting their risk exposure by declining CLI's

SRT I think you are probably right.

Discover is one that I unfortunately burned many years ago, but they have never mentioned that at all.

It may be weird but my feeling is, if you are just a second class citizen why bother. There are plenty of banks and CUs out there. If you really can't earn your way back into their good graces there isn't much point to it.

And no I don't blame them a bit for not wanting you in, in the first place if that's what they did. Part of me wishes they would have simply declined my Zync app and I'd have gone on with life and forgotten it. But it helped me to get the Cash + card and in with US Bank so some good came of my Amex fiasco. I guess for that it was worth it.
