I doubt it, card present credit card fraud in the UK is very very low. Just expect to be asked for ID from UK merchants. Some are very suspicious by swipe cards (Most cashiers are young and they don't even remember magnetic stripe cards), especially by small businesses (Although bare in mind Amex probably won't even be accepted by really small businesses).

My Amex spent most of its time in my wallet while I was in Italy. If I had to guess I would say 1 out of 4 times credit cards were accepted I saw Amex on the list. I used it at a few restaurants but never had the occasion to use the chip & sig function. A few places had the reader but when I pulled it out they grabbed it and swiped it.

I had planned to use my CSP anyway.

Well I am back in Australia now - I had my card blocked 3 times in a week !!

McDonalds in Covent Garden for a purchase of £4 (not bad considering I charged £500 as the prior purchase 2 minute walk away)
Tesco in Sale - funny thing about this one is that 3 Tesco purchases went through OK prior
Orange in Sale - But ran transaction through a 2nd time and no problems amazingly enough.

I found to be getting out my Visa a lot more often then what I do here in Melbourne - hopefully things might be better next time I go over !

I travel home on vacation to Panama and back to work in the US, I called Amex to notify them of my travels, (I have Amex plat) the customer rep replied back saying that their systems have been recently upgraded and it won't be necessary to call in to notify in the future but thank me for notifying them anyways. So maybe they have smarter systems to recognize travel patterns of their customers..

I got the same thing when I called to let them know about traveling to Italy. My domestic traveling is pretty predictable but my international travel is sporadic and varies greatly. Regardless I had no problems the few times I did use it.

Well I guess their systems are smarter, I call chase all the time to let them know anyways when I travel, I go to and from Panama every other month so that should not be too hard for them to recognize the travel pattern, I will however plan a trip to brazil for the world cup 2014, gotta get my soccer fix. Go Team USA!!!
