Do all of the readers in Europe accept mag stripe cards?
Amex Zync - NPSL (since 06/2012)
Kohl's - $700 (since 05/2010)
Dell Preferred Account - $2,500 (since 03/2009)
Citi Dividend World Elite Mastercard - $10,000 (since 11/2007)

In most restaurants and that kind of thing they could read a mag stripe. In a lot of machines for buying things like metro tickets and that kind of thing they did NOT have mag stripe readers. It was actually very annoying. I also ran into a problem at a grocery store where the machine could not read my card, not sure why but I suspect it was because of mag stripe because the machine looked different. My platinum AmEx was rejected at a department store. The clerk could not figure out why because they take AmEx and I was able to use it elsewhere. My mag stripe visa card there worked though.

My take was that most places could still take mag stripes but the situation seems to be changing very fast. The last time I was in europe was about 6 years ago and it was much easier to use my US cards then so things are definitely changing.

Lucky all my Amexs are chipped, even my US corporate card and obviously UK cards are as the UK was the first country to roll out this specific version of EMV. All though noticed something weird on some of my receipts from France, in the payment method it said Visa/Amex in one line. I was thinking that was maybe because they only took Visa and Amex but they all took MC and most Carte Bleu.

What did you have to say to get your US Amex a chip? I called to ask for it on my Platinum and was told no such luck.

Don't be surprised if a non-chipped card comes in the mail. Amex has been having some problems getting this right on the first try (they will get it right eventually).
Cards:
American Express Platinum (NPSL)
Penfed Platinum Reward Visa ($28K)
Chase Freedom Visa ($25K)
Fidelity American Express ($20K)
American Express Blue Cash Preferred ($20K)
Bank of America Cash Rewards MasterCard ($20K)
Citi Thank You Preferred Visa ($9.5K)
Chase Sapphire Preferred ($7.5K)
US Bank Cash + Visa Signature ($7K)
Discover IT ($4K)

My Cent is not chipped and I've travelled to various cities around the world and have not had any issues. My card was accepted and goods/services charged without any delays or questions.

Don't worry about it. The chip may be the way of the future but all cards with a magnetic strip will function the world over.

I am leaving in a week and a half for Manchester - I called AMEX yesterday to let them know where I am going around Engalnd and where I am transiting through. I hope that my card does not get blocked.
