Possible to use card before receiving it in mail?

Postby Av8er » Wed Jul 04, 2012 6:08 pm

Just got approved for the PR Gold yesterday but I need to make a big purchase on Sunday. Is it possible to get the card number and all before you get the card in the mail so you can still use it?

The reason I ask is because I've done this before with other cards but I can't seem to find if Amex does it.

If you did the online application for the account, it should have given you the option to receive your card number right away for online purchases. This happened for my Delta Gold, ZYNC, and Starwood American Express Cards. The other option you have is to always call and ask.
American Express: Platinum, Zync, Platinum Delta SkyMiles, Blue, Starwood Preferred Guest
Barclaycard US: iTunes Reward Visa, US Airways Premier World MasterCard
Chase: Sapphire Preferred Visa Signature, Freedom Visa
Citi Bank: Hilton HHonors Visa Signature, AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite MasterCard
Bank of America Virgin Atlantic World Elite MasterCard
Discover: Discover it
Other:Macy's Star Rewards, Target REDCard

Nah, I did it over the phone and they didn't give me that option. I also never received any sort of email from Amex at all. The lady just said it would get to me within 7-10 days.

I called this morning about getting the CC number to use this weekend but the guy says it should get here by tomorrow... conflicting info. He said if it's not here by then I can call back but they most likely won't give the number over the phone.

Yeah I've never heard of companies supplying card info over the phone before it gets to you. The card hasn't even been activated yet, not to mention it could pose a very real security issue. But hey, if they end up giving it to you, more power to you I guess!

Now that I think about it, the only time I was ever given the CC number was to store cards like guitar center when I was taking advantage of some financing offer. I guess we'll see. Thanks folks!

If you don't get the card today, you can always call and ask for it to be overnighted. They did this for me since I was going out of town.

Now that sounds pretty plausible. I just couldn't see any major CC issuers doing the same thing. I definitely wasn't given my Amex account number when I opened my Green card online.

Amex is awesome! I told them I needed it Sunday and they connected me with the card replacement dept so they could overnight me one for free instead!! Great stuff!

Are you sure about this? When I applied for Delta Gold Card, there was no option to receive the card number right away for online purchases.
