Blue Cash - good for me?

Postby Okie21 » Mon Jul 02, 2012 9:53 pm

I am almost 23 and have had a credit card (Cabela's Visa) with a $500 limit for 18 months. I have never carried a balance or made a late payment. I believe I have a score in the low 700's. I had a 695, then it dropped to like 650 cause of utilization issues, but i have kept my utilization from 10-20% for 6 months so it should be back up.

I do not travel at all and don't care about the type of rewards that come w/ the gold and green cards. I would love to hear from some people with experience what they think about this card and if i would get approved. Oh and my income is $45k/yr, and i have 18k in student loans i have been paying for several months, no late payments.

The Blue Cash would be good for you since you don't travel. There's a thread comparing Blue Cash Everyday vs. Blue Cash Preferred. Personally I have the BCE, because I know that I will only use it for the 3% grocery when my Chase Freedom does not have the grocery bonus, and also because I do not get grocery very often.

With a credit score in the low 700's, I would say your chance of being approved is 50/50. But it does not hurt to try, if anything you can always call for reconsideration.

Main Card: Amex Platinum
For gas: Penfed Platinum Cash Rewards
For travel & dining: Chase Sapphire Preferred

Maybe you should try for an easier cashback card like citi dividend or chase freedom. Amex is sometimes picky when it comes to those cards.
Cards in my wallet:
-Citi Forward Card for College Students-July 2011
-American Express Platinum Delta Skymiles--July 2013

Or just get both Freedom and BCE (Blue Cash Everyday). I got both because I always wanted 3%+ on grocery. Also the Amex gives you a 3X CLI (credit limit increase) after 60 days, thus increasing your total available credit and lowering your credit utilization %.

Ok thanks for the input so far. Bad news though

I applied two days ago and was instantly denied. They have not provided me the reasons why yet. What all is involved with calling for a reconsideration, and should I wait until they give tell me why I got denied to call for the reconsideration?

So I called Amex for a recon and was told that there is absolutely nothing to be done about my denied app. He said that unless there was false information on the report from the credit bureau that they used. In which case I would have to take it up with them, get it fixed, then simply resubmit the app. I kept saying that I was aware that applicants can call and ask for a reconsideration anyway, and I kept asking for someone else to speak to. But the guy said there was nowhere else to go, and the underwriters made the decision bit they don't take calls etc.

Is this normal? Cause from everything I've read on here, a recon sounded like you calling and bargaining with them over why they should extend you credit.

Call the underwriters directly from the list of numbers above and see if you can get it overturned.

Honestly unless as he said there is something that is incorrect, I doubt it. Amex is not known for doing recons unless something in the report is wrong. I tried to recon with them when I got declined and it was the same thing you found.

But you have nothing to lose by trying except some time, I just would not expect it to be successful. You may need to give it 6 months to a year.

Actually the numbers listed above don't connect to the underwriters, just the application status line. I was told the same thing --Amex underwriters are not customer facing, and therefore don't take calls.

Then I would say that's pretty much that. Amex is extremely difficult to recon. About all you can do is ask the CSR what you might do to get an approval at a later time and do that.
