I want an American Express!

Postby TheAmericanConsumer » Thu Jun 21, 2012 3:33 am

Mid 20's, single, 50k/yr, 6 yrs is oldest line, TransUnion 766, low car payment and college loans, no mortgage, < 5% utilization, I have the following cards.....

08' GE Brooks Brothers MasterCard - 4400 CL apr 22.99%? (use at BB and then once every 6mo to keep active since Dept Store oldest line that has been increased from $900 to $4,400 by them.)
08' Capital One Best Buy Store Card - 1000 CL apr unknown (use for no interest at BBY, very rare use)
09' Citi Forward Visa - 4000 CL apr 12.25% (Bars, emergencies)
10' Chase Freedom Visa - 2,500 CL apr 14.99% (revolving rewards)
11' Discover More - 6,500 CL apr 19.99% (revolving rewards)
11' Capital One VentureOne - 3,000 apr 19.99% (1.25x points, will be gone before Nov).
12' Capital One Venture - 7,500 apr 20.99% (2x points, everything!)

I know what everyone is thinking, enough all ready! But I value having diverse methods of payment. I hold no interesting bearing balances.

The only thing missing from my arsenal is an American Express Charge Card. I couldn't help but upgrade a few months ago to the Venture, I figured I should do it quickly because I intend on keeping it over all others for every purchase not eligible for the Freedom/More 5x bonus.

I really want to American Express though, if not now then in the near future once a few hard inquiries are not factored in. I don't visit the airport often but that is always subject to change. I make lots of purchases online. I value benefit/accessibility over luxury. The $25 annual fee for Zync is not a factor in the decision, I would use for a few purchases a month. For the Amex Gold, I may consider giving up the Venture card and Visa Signature and sticking with VentureOne since that has no annual fee. It really sucks you can't upgrade as of right now from Znyc within Amex. Do I have anything to gain with Zync? Somebody convince it one way or the other!!! Gold or Zync!!!

I work for a major financial institutional and it seems like everyone is going to approve me, I am just afraid of the age of my accounts with is 3yr on the dot right now and thus why I don't want to wait on anything. Green is not worth it to me...

Just make sure you're using the services you're paying for, or you're just lining their pockets.

And this is why Gold is really hard to justify right now. If I have to cancel the Zync and reapply for the Gold or Platinum in the future so be it. I just do not want the charge card addition to be overly negative to my score, or very light use of the Zync to hinder my relationship potential with Amex down the road. Any thoughts or experiences from you Amex vets or credit score gurus?

Being The American Consumer after all... (crickets crickets)..... I am out to build a mutually beneficial relationship with the banks, they won't line their pockets at my expense (I wouldn't consider $25/yr doing that). I'm really trying gauge whether I can gain from Amex at this point over VISA Signature, where with the latter "the fine print" seems to be just as good if not better. Thoughts????

Gold probably is a dream due to lack of utility right now, still tempting though. Being The American Consumer... (crickets crickets).... I want to build a mutually beneficial relationship with the banks, I won't let them line their pockets at my expense (25/yr no big deal). What i'm really after is insights from the Amex vets and credit score guru's. Will minimal use with the Zync overly hurt my score or future relationship potential with Amex? Are there real advantages to Zync over Visa Signature? "The Fine Print" with the latter seems just as good if not better. I would apply for Zync immediately if they still gave the 10,000 points but that seems to have disappeared if i'm not mistaking. To me, cancelling Zync down the road and reapplying to Gold/Platnium down the road would be no big deal. The more the merrier people!

Green I think is a joke. Go gold or premiere gold. I have zync, can't convert into frequent flier miles and cannot upgrade. 2 of the worst things I hate about my card. Other then that, its good card though.
-American Express Zync.
-Discover IT. 4.5k limit 7.99%
-MC Citi diamond preferred. 1500 limit
-Visa Chase freedom. 2k limit.(23.24%, NOT IN USE)
-Miles by discover 1.5k limit.7.99%
-Best buy store card. 1500 limit
-Mt. America visa 1k limit
