Use your card however you want, you'll be fine not using it for periods of time. My parents have platinum and use it the way you think, only using it for vacations or airfare. Of course, you'll earn more MR points by using it for everything but it's not necessary.
Cards in my wallet:
-Citi Forward Card for College Students-July 2011
-American Express Platinum Delta Skymiles--July 2013

Just use your card for everything, it's good for you, the merchant, and your bank. The only place I went to that did not want to take my credit card was a small local car shop. I needed some tire caps, you know those things you put on the air pump thing, and the cashier said the purchase is only $1.25 so he just gave them to me.

See if you paid cash you wouldn't have saved $1.25. :D

But most places now days will accept credit cards. Even small businesses will have an iPhone/Droid with the credit card swiper thing.

Main Card: Amex Platinum
For gas: Penfed Platinum Cash Rewards
For travel & dining: Chase Sapphire Preferred

as i mentioned in a previous post - i feel ripped off whenever i use cash since i don't get anything out of it. cash lacks points and purchase protection.
