To Upgrade or Not? That is the Question

Postby AMEXAT19 » Mon Jun 18, 2012 8:12 pm

Today I called American Express to pay my current Green card account, having been a member since December of 2011 I was invited to upgrade my account to Platinum. At the time the representative was unable to upgrade due to system problems and to me to call back. Later this even I called back and the representative advised me it was in my best interest to not upgrade because I would be charged the annual fee and why lose six more months of free. So my question is would you all take the upgrade or wait as she told me till December.

Speaking from personal experience, your upgrade won't 'walk up and walk away' from you if you decide to wait it out (unless you end up hitting some dire financial straits and your credit takes a major hit). So, that being said, unless there was something I definitely and absolutely wanted from the Platinum RIGHT NOW, I would wait it out.

Unless you really make use of the card and its services, the fee may or may not be 'worth it'.

-Can you afford the Platinum annual fee?

-Will the cost outweigh the benefit for you and your spending habits?

-Do you want the Platinum card?

It all really depends on you and how much of the benefits you can really use.

@JNK I actually think thats makes sense, because I will not be doing a lot of travel this year. So I will wait it out.

@thomaswhitehall The annual fee really isn't a probelm, but the Platinum is something that I want to have.

The thing I guess that really shocked me was that I have on been with AMEX for 6 months. I have read on here that they don't usually allow you to upgrade until the 13th month. So I was shocked!

When I had a Gold card I was invited to apply for Platinum. I couldn't afford it at the time so I said no. Later when I COULD afford it, they said I was not eligible to upgrade. I had to wait another year before it showed up as an invite again. It was based on some formula for spending that invited me.

Can you go into more detail on this if your remember? Some people have said it's a minimum of $400/month...any idea?

My personal charge invite was triggered by purchasing $5k in eyeglasses at an upscale store, Europtics.
