Sure, as soon as I check into the Best Western, heat up my tv dinner and open my domestic beer.

NYC, I am glad that you found your soulmate. One of my friends parents are the same way. When they met, they were in school, and she and her parents would help him out (He was poor, and had to work very hard to get where he is now). He like your friend went to law school , saved his money, and now he never has worry about bills and such because him and a partner own some commercial buildings in our area as well as 2-3 shopping centers. My buddy is the same age as I am and his parents bought him a Boss Mustang as an 18th B-day present (How many 18 year olds get that as a B-day present?). He always says that he owes it to his wife and her parents for helping him out and he repays the favor as much as he can by making her happy. So it is quite similar story, but everything in life is about hard work and will power. ( I know I went off-topic, but NYC's story reminded of my friend and his family).

Did Amex change their upgrade policy?
I had the gold card for a year, and didn't use it that much. My biggest purchase was a mattress from Macy's, which was a little under $1000. Other than that i spend maybe $200-400 a month on the card and still got an "you been pre-approved to upgrade to a Platinum card".
I went for it and got the Platinum card without any problems.
Now i use my Platinum for almost everything, and probably spend like $3000-5000 a month on the card.

I've heard a rumor that the platinum card has the same requirements of a Gold or Green, so if you already have one of those and your credit is fine upgrading shouldn't be an issue... I guess that if you're willing to pay for it they'll give it to you... But that's just a rumor

i'm sure amex has a certain criteria for platinum but to be honest i'm not sure what it consist of. when i had my gold my monthly spend was approx 10-15k before the jumped on the platinum offer (50k mrp when spending 1k in 3 months).

my spend consisted of:

- dining (fine and chain restaurants)
- shopping (banana republic to high fashion)
- utility bills
- misc everyday spending

i just looked at my year end summary (2011) and my lowest spend was 981.00- with the highest being 39k

i did ask how i was chosen and i remember the csr saying my spending habits and credit worthiness shows i'm a good fit for a platinum card.
