Just applied and qualified for the Platinum today!

Postby PlatAt21 » Wed May 23, 2012 7:29 pm

I'm 21 with a remarkably high credit score by any standards (far exceeding the standards for most young adults). I had a Zync card for 2 years and just opened my new platinum card with Amex this afternoon! I'm really excited and understand most of what to expect because my parents both have platinum cards.

However, I was wondering if anyone has any tips or pointers on how to fully take advantage of the concierge/convenience features specifically in a major metropolitan area like Los Angeles. Basically, I'm just curious if there are any cool, possibly under-advertised, things their services may include.

I'd also love to hear any success stories that people have had with their platinum experiences with AMEX :D **Please keep any negatives to yourself as I have already committed to this card and criticism would do nothing but bruise my confidence in my decision** LOL!

Thanks!

If you're in LA then there are sometime concerts and stuff you get special access to. Sign up for their emails. Aside from that, you won't notice anything special most of the time but you'll gee unexpected perks when traveling like room upgrades and so forth. Enjoy.

Not trying to intrude but can you give me an idea of what your average monthly spend was on your Zync? Did they offer you the platinum upgrade after the 1st year and you just took it now because it fits your needs better now than before? I have gold, trying to make sure I qualify for the upgrade come 13 months.

I had my zync card for just under 2 years but i was only spending between 2 and 5 thousand a month on it. I've been wanting the platinum for some time but because I don't spend that much on my zync I was never offered the upgrade. So I decided to just apply for the platinum (I haven't had a credit inquiry in more than 6 months and, as i said, my score was very high). I didn't need the card by any means, i just wanted it and the perks that I've seen my parents enjoy with their platinum card.

They didn't offer you the Platinum upgrade on your Zync with ~$24,000-60,000 yearly spend? Sounds like a lot of spend

I've seen people offered the upgrade with ~$4,800 spend/year, didn't know if that was a standard or not.

The Zync Card cannot be upgraded, I emailed amex a few weeks ago and they confirmed the information. If you have great credit and decent income they'll most likely offer you the upgrade, especially if you have some travel spending on your current card.

I just got the PRG hoping they offer me the upgrade after a year... Only if I had known Zync wasn't upgradable before, now I have an extra inquiry for that reason...

congrats on you platinum, you'll love the perks !!
Amex: Business Platinum (09/12) BCP $10,500 (03/13)
Visa: Capital One Journey $750 (04/11) Chase Freedom $1,800 (04/12)
MasterCard Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select $8,500 (05/13)
Discover: Discover It $2500 (07/11)
Store Cards: Amazon $3900 (12/11) Macy's $500 (04/11) Kohl's $500 (05/12) Victoria's Secret $750 (11/12)

I'll keep it for now, I like the 2x points on several green merchants, when the renewal comes in march '13 I'll have to make a decision whether to keep it or not

With Amex backdating, the harm and possible benefits of opening and closing Amex are great. Day after my wife finally got backdated back to 1995 from 2011 member date, had her apply to 2 Amex. She is not sure she loves the cards, but we can always close and open different ones. Each closed one wil continue to help her aaoa. Each new one does too. An inquiry barely hurts and effects are short lived. Not even sure new Amex counts as new account.
Amex Centurion, Amex Platinum, Amex BCP 8k->24k (5/23/12), Amex TE 15k, Cap One 1.5% 15k->20k (8/7/13), CSP 25k, Chase Palladium 100k, Citibank AA 35k (AU), Firestone 1.8k->2.2k->2.4k (8/20/12), JFCU Jloc 30k, PenFed Plat Rewards 30k, SF Fire 30k, US Bank Cash+ 25k
