My First AMEX!

Postby melfice829 » Mon Jun 04, 2012 6:19 pm

Hi, Newbie here.

Got my first amex (blue) in the mail today made it to the minor leagues, 10K CL woooo so potentially destructive! I have another one that does cash back, I wanted to try the point system. So why not AMEX?

Where can I go from here? Is AMEX okay with me 1 shotting every monthly balance? Can I eventually upgrade to Green/Gold? How much does AMEX prefer I spend of the credit limit, 10%, 20%?

Thanks, sorry that I come off as a total n00b with credit cards.

New to AMEX Help

Postby Kicker » Tue Jun 12, 2012 5:43 pm

Hey everyone, I'm basically student and I've had a VISA credit card with a limit of 900 dollars since last yr of November. To my surprise, I received a green card offer in the mail. I applied online this weekend and got approved. Anyways, I realized a charge card needs the total balance paid off each month. So if I spend 1000 dollars my 1st month, will my credit improve at all? And should I keep using both of my cards every month for even better results?

thank you so much
My Wallet:

Wells Fargo Visa - $1200 (Obtained 2011)
AMEX Green - NPSL (Obtained 2012)
Chase Freedom - $3000 (Obtained 2012)
Citi Diamond Preferred - $2000 (Obtained 2013)

Having 2 major credit cards should improve your score in the long run yes. Once you get over the initial hard pull, most of which goes away in a couple of months, you'll see it go up.

Using it will also increase your Amex internal score. That's a good thing as well.

Thank you very much for your reply. So I should keep using both cards every month and I should see an improvement in my score? Also sorry for asking, but is a hard pull when a bank pulls up my records? This is what it says on the top: "Inquiries Shared With Others."
If so, it currently shows American Express and 3 other banks and they all expire next yr...so is this holding back my score?

Thank you!

They initially assign you a "limit" that will adjust base on your spending, they won't print it on the paperwork but you can call customer service and they'll tell you. When I first got it I was upset because after spending a little over $1700 my card was declined while making an online purchase so I called them and the rep told me that you usually get a low limit before your first statement because they have no record of your spending. It makes sense, It'll be a problem if somebody goes and spend $50k on the first month and never pays back.

After the initial statement I've been testing their spending ability tool on the website and I've been approved for up to $7.5k
Amex: Business Platinum (09/12) BCP $10,500 (03/13)
Visa: Capital One Journey $750 (04/11) Chase Freedom $1,800 (04/12)
MasterCard Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select $8,500 (05/13)
Discover: Discover It $2500 (07/11)
Store Cards: Amazon $3900 (12/11) Macy's $500 (04/11) Kohl's $500 (05/12) Victoria's Secret $750 (11/12)

I think so. They have to get to know you and your spending and paying habits before they let you run it up. If you have good credit and high income you probably won't get shut down at 2k, but they may shut it down at 10-15. After you get a history with them they adjust the limits. If you miss payments I would imagine they will lower the limits.
