Best alternative to American Express when it's not accepted?

Postby Blzer76 » Mon May 14, 2012 10:49 am

Which card do you use when Amex is not accepted?

I currently have a Visa rewards through my CU, but am looking for alternatives.

I guess the card would need to be accepted almost everywhere else, maybe have rewards/cash back program, or great benefits.

Looking to get ideas from other members here. Thanks!

I think I didn't word the question correctly. I am looking for the various types of Visa, MC. In case Amex is not accepted.

I currently have a visa from Alliant CU and BofA visa. Just looking for something else that might be better, since I only get 1x per dollar spent, except BofA, which has the 3x gas, 2x groceries.

Similarly, keep a check with you, cause you never know...I vote citi dividend visa, since it's, well, a visa, and you get some money back.
Wallet: Amex BCE & Chase Freedom. (Credit Card dieting since 2014)

For me I use Mastercard before my Visa, Mastercard because some of my favourite bookshops still don't take American Express and my American Express and Mastercard are linked up to the same account.

Chase Freedom is supposed to be a pretty good card, it gives 5% cash back on rotating categories, and i think 1% on everything else. There are limits though. It can come in Visa or Mastercard, depending on where you get the application link from, but neither version has an annual fee. I am planning to get one later this year, but I just got the Chase Sapphire Preferred and I don't want to push my luck with them by apping too soon.

This never happens to me. However when I order Boston Red sox merchandise through the catalog they don't take Discover so I used my capitol1 visa card. But I never have issues about my American express card. If you go into italian/pizza places take outs those places don't take American express I would then use cash. the only place in my area that I can think of that doesn't take American express is bagel boys which I pay cash.

Bizer you are looking for ideas correct? do you travel on business or are you in an area that really doesn't take American Express?

about my visa card I have the gold version of capitol1 I get 1.25 miles per dollar spent.

for travel would suggest either the capitol1 venture the Blue card 2 miles per dollar, you get concierge service they help you get dinner reservations if you want them help you. they can get you sporting events, hard to find gifts.however when redeeming for airline tickets you have to have all the miles.

for example let's say you have 25,000 miles but you want to go on a vacation and your airline ticket cost 475.00 you wouldn't have enough. what I'm trying to say is you can't break up your miles it's all or none. the annual fee is 59.00 free for the first year.

the chase sapphire is a good card and you get 2 points per dollar spent on restaurants, with this card you also get concierge service. the preferred is 95.00 free for the first year. but you have to redeem on their site.

for cash back the chase Freedom is a nice card, you get 1% back they have a 5% rotating category but you have to sign up popular categories like movies, drug stores, gas stations, restaurants , home improvement, department stores and fashion.

Since I use my Zync card in lieu of a debit card, I'll just switch to my Visa debit card if they don't accept AMEX. If I want to run credit, usually Discover.
