what does it look like now? the "chips" always take away from the aesthetic value of the card IMO and are quite corrosive i've noticed. Used to have an old atm card from a dutch bank that had a chip in it. Its all rusted and gross now. Hope they choose more resistant metals this time around.

Kind of pathetic that given the caliber of Centurian and the annual fee that Amex couldn't manage true Chip + PIN. Amex was also the last of the 4 major networks to agree to EMV...even Discover beat them.

What does the chip look like? Is it square like the Citibank and BofA chips or more oval?

How is PIN reset handled? Are there ATM machines around the US that support that?

The chip itself can be different on different cards. It just depends on the factory and batch of chips. Also the contactless card chips tend to be bigger.

Most of my cards are chipped, I've never had one of mine rust lol Did you store it on the garden table?

Amex tend to have decent chips, My HSBC UK debit card breaks really easy, go through a new card once a year.

I just called today to ask for one on my AMEX Gold. The representative told me that they are not available yet but there is a select group that are conducting a trial run in the US...of which I could not be a part of right now and did not give me a completion date for the trial. They found initially their chip or system wasn't as secure as they wanted/planned. The rep just told me to keep using and signing and that it is very secure and they'll back me up in the event of any fraud. Good service on the call but disappointing as I just received the V-chip on my Bank Americard Cash Rewards MC and the Discover Zip.

Interesting what they told you about lack of security. If the program is flawed, they have yet to tell those that have gotten the chip it seems of the security glitch in their card. My hope would be that they mean to move from Chip and Sig to Chip and Pin but that's wishful thinking I guess. I was told that they started specifically with the Platinum and Centurion due to the no transaction fee and for those that traveled using those cards. Other cards would slowly be transitioned by 2014.

What Discover card do you have that has a chip in it? ZIP has RFID but not Chip and Pin or Chip and Sig. Discover hasn't even started rolling out Chip cards from what I was told. I could be wrong though.

Websteth, my Discover does not have a chip and from what I understood from a call today they do not offer any cards with the chips yet. The Zip does have the RFID but is not chip equipped as you mentioned. That was my my lack of clarity on the original post. From what I can tell the only one of my cards that is offering the chip right now is my BankAmericard Cash Rewards World MC. AMEX Gold, Cap1, Citi, Discover, Chase not available (to me, at least) per my round of calls today.

Discover has an excuse really, they haven't issued any EMV cards before. American Express should be the most experienced as they have done it themselves before in many other countries. They even managed to be behind in the UK though when it came out, I got my first emv chip card from them 2 years after the deadline. (Think this was because my old one expired just before they started sending out new ones).

Really cannot believe this. We've had the visible chips and contactless payment chips on all our cards (inc. AmEx) in the UK for years. There's no such thing as 'swipe and sign' anymore. It makes you too vulnerable to fraud.
