AmEx Gold vs. Starwood?

Postby sofeea5664 » Thu Apr 26, 2012 6:37 pm

Hi all! I am looking to apply for an American Express and it would be my first. Ultimately, my goal is to obtain the Platinum, but it appears I may have to take baby steps.

I travel a lot (for leisure) and the benefits of Platinum seem to be better than obtaining status for one airline. Anyway, between the AmEx Gold and Starwood cards, would it matter which of the two I should apply for to eventually get to Platinum?

I have about a 730 credit score; not new to credit; have four other credit cards all with limits under $10k (2 paid off and 2 with balance); and household income over $100k.

I like what both cards have to offer as far as travel benefits, although SPG seems to partner with more airlines. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have both Platinum and SPG. Originally got the SPG to get the bonus Starwood points when I still had the Gold Card. With Platinum, you can transfer points to Starwood so I might just keep the Platinum. Really, I think it is up to you.

Do you travel internationally? If so, go with Platinum.

I do travel internationally. Its my understanding that it's difficult to get Platinum by just applying. Better to get a smaller AmEx first then get invited to apply? So would it be better to apply for Starwood or Gold first?

I think you mean hotels. I would say for vacation travel I would go with the Gold card, for business travel I would say the Starwood Preferred guest card. Since you're not entertaining any clients, you're not taking 6 customers out to eat, you're not going to theatrical shows.

If it's just you and your family and I'm sure you're not traveling every week. The gold card is a great card.

If I was in your shoes I would pick the Gold.

I actually have a green card.
