Can I pay card statement with a different currency?

Postby Exintegro » Tue Apr 17, 2012 1:19 am

Hi all,

So I just found out that I had some leftover Canadian dollars that probably not gonna use for a while. Saw the back of my statement indicated that "If we accept payment in a foreign currency, we will convert it into US dollars at a conversion rate that is acceptable to us, unless a particular rate is required by law."

So does that mean I could simply pay the statement with Canadian dollars? Or do I have to exchange it into USD?

Sorry for the noob question since I'm fairly new to Amex :D

Thank you all

Last I checked you cannot put a wad of cash in an envelope and mail it to pay your bill.

Ditto, Platinum. Further, I wouldn't trust them to pick the exchange rate. Better to pay in the currency on the bill.
American Express: Blue Cash Preferred (groceries, 6%; gas, department store, 3%); Gold Delta SkyMiles (Delta Air Lines, 2 miles/dollar, free checked bag).
US Bank: Cash+ (utilities, phone, internet, restaurant, 5%; drugstores, 2%).
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (everything, 2%); Fidelity Visa (everything, 1.5%).
Chase: Freedom (rotating, 5%); Amazon (Amazon.com, 3%); PriorityClub (IHG hotels, 5 points/dollar); Sapphire (not in use).

*All cards are registered with PriorityClub IDine program for 8 points/dollar at participating restaurants.

I got such a nice exchange rate from BofA in Canada. However I took out way too much of the colorful currency at Scotiabank and ended up giving it to BofA upon my return to the US at a lame conversion rate (but money exchange places had even lamer rates).

I believe US-issued cards need to be paid in US currency (this should be in your card agreement's fine print), but you could ask them.

You can pay Amex in cash at an Amex travel office.

Thank you all for the response

I tried to exchange them this morning but they refused because they couldn't match the number
I took a closer look and realized they're printed in 1988.....

Guess I'll save them since they're in pristine condition (still brand new, no fold and what not)

Again, Thank you all :D
