Applying for AMEX with average credit score?

Postby denny33142 » Mon Apr 16, 2012 10:34 pm

I was approved for an AMEX Zync about 8 months ago and use it as my main card, however I want to apply for a card with better rewards or at least get one of the revolving cards.

Problem is that I do not know which card to apply for since my credit is still not very good. I am hoping that you guys can give me some suggestions on which card I have a better chance of getting approved for with an average credit score.

I do not know my real Experian FICO but I did get the free credit report that AMEX provides and it has a "Plus" score of 665. My Transunion FICO is 652 but it does have 2 baddies as opposed to Experian which only has 1 baddie.

If your talking about American Express premium credit cards vs there lending cards I wouldn't recommend them to you since you mentioned that you don't have good credit.

I would recommend the bank called Orchard, this is a card for people starting out like you.

If this doesn't work you should try your local bank and I don't mean Chase, Citibank, Capitol1, or Bank of America. What I mean is a bank like Provident, Hudson Valley Savings, KeyBank, or whatever your local branch is.

If these options don't work ask your Dad to go to a bank that you like and ask him to talk to your branch mgr, see if he can then cosign you for a credit card that's appropriate for you.

After a while of using this card, later on you can then think about which card from American Express you want - a lending credit card or a premium charge card.

You already have a Zync card. Give us some more info before you backtrack. Do you have any negatives on your credit file? You credit score is okay. Also what other credit lines do you have?

Moneycard, he already has a Zync and assuming no bad negatives, he can probably get a charge card from AMEX. No need to go backwards. He would probably have issues getting a revolver from AMEX. But he could easily get one from Capital One or HSBC or Citibank assuming no negatives.

My own guess is it will take some time for you to get a revolver from Amex. They are a lot harder to get than their charge cards are and you were kind of on the borderline for getting the Zync I would guess. They won't like the baddies, and that score will be low to them, but what you do have in your favor is you are building a history with them with your Zync card. Having said that I'm guessing you need more time with them to build history and increase your score (and hopefully let the baddies fall off).

The good news is you can apply for a card with them being a member and my understanding is if they decline you it's only a soft pull vs a hard inquiry.

As far as upgrading Zync, I keep reading some people are saying it is or they did it, and others are saying they were told it is not. I have no idea honestly the best bet is to call Amex directly and ask if they would be willing to upgrade you after 13 months (they will tell you they can't do it sooner due to the "Card Act" for sure). And please let us know what they tell you, as I personally have no idea if it is upgradable or not.
