Why do you have both a Platinum and Gold card?

Postby mlint007 » Sat Apr 14, 2012 4:15 am

Hello Everyone!

I noticed on this board many posters have both the Platinum Amex and the Gold Amex...I was wondering why? Do you split your purchases between the two, use one more than the other or just because?

It makes sense to have them both if you are a big spender on airfare, gas and groceries... The Premier Rewards Gold gives you 2x and 3x points on those categories and then the Platinum gives you that $200 airline credit, the fine hotels, airport lounges, etc, but only one point per dollar... Having both cards you get the best of both worlds, but since you'll be spending $175 + $450 = $625 in annual fees you must be taking advantage of all the benefits to make it worth it.

Also, some people have a Gold for personal use and a Biz Platinum for their business
Amex: Business Platinum (09/12) BCP $10,500 (03/13)
Visa: Capital One Journey $750 (04/11) Chase Freedom $1,800 (04/12)
MasterCard Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select $8,500 (05/13)
Discover: Discover It $2500 (07/11)
Store Cards: Amazon $3900 (12/11) Macy's $500 (04/11) Kohl's $500 (05/12) Victoria's Secret $750 (11/12)

I have both because I wasn't sure if I wanted/needed PLT, so I started off with gold because of no annual fee the first year. I ended up getting a PLT card two months later for the benefits. I still put all my airfare and gas on the gold card for the extra points, but use PLT for everything else. When my year is up with the PRG card and they want me to pay an annual fee, I'll cancel it. I enjoy getting 3x points on airfare, but I'm not yet sure if it's worth the extra 175 fee. I'll have to tally up my PRG points at the end of the year to make sure.

Also, I like having the gold card to use when I'm on the plane and want to buy meals or drinks that I will be reimbursed for on my expense report for work. No sense in wasting my $200 airline credit!

Congrats! It's a good idea to keep the biz separate from personal expenses, some people pool all the money and then charge it off on 1 card...
Wallet: Amex BCE & Chase Freedom. (Credit Card dieting since 2014)

I have Amex Green for personal (though considering upgrading to gold) and Business Platinum for my company. The combination works nicely for me.
