Is American Express accepted in South Korea?

Postby Celestine » Fri Apr 13, 2012 11:04 pm

Is American Express widely accepted in South Korea-Seoul? And I have read somewhere, I forgot where, that there is no foreign transaction fee on each transaction, is it true?

If you have a Platinum premium card there's no foreign transaction fee. But with the other Amex cards it's 2.7%.

I have never been there. I would imagine there will be a lot of places that do, but not every place.

What is platinum premium card? Is it different from the personal platinum charge card?

Nope same card, 450.00 annual fee. It's a premium charge card.

Is it widely accepted there - like on supermarkets and groceries?

Thanks.

Now... I have been thinking of adding my youngest brother as a temporary authorized user. He will be going their as an exchange student for around five to six months. So I thought instead of sending money through the bank every now and then, I would just add him to my account and let him use AMEX charge card. I pay here in the US account balance on the card. Of course, he will also have pocket money for transportation and those places that does not accept cards or AMEX.

Debit VISA or Mastercard is not an option I am considering; higher risk than using a credit/charge card.

But it is risky though regardless he is my youngest brother or not. But sometimes we have to take risks.
