How to get an Amex Centurion card invitation?

Postby AtlSam » Mon Apr 09, 2012 9:34 am

What exactly are the qualifications for a Centurion card? Last year (my first year with the Platinum card) I charged about 241,000 on my card. Is there any way American Express will even think about inviting me to Centurion?

The word on the street is that nobody really knows what prompts them to invite you to apply. Many people in the past stated that after spending $250K they were sent the invitation.

AMEX did not send out any invitations in 2011 in the US.

On another board, someone stated that he called AMEX and asked for the upgrade and they obliged. However, he is full of you know what and not many people believed him. Plus, if you have to ASK for the upgrade, it kind of cheapens it in my opinion. Centurian should be something that you are invited to and that not everybody can have.

Me? I will stick with my Blue and Zync

I wouldn't want it, it doesn't pay me 2% or more. It should pay 3% to reward the big spenders.

Pretty much agreed on CC Deville for this one. Centurion should be acquired by special invitation not by requesting or asking AMEX. Otherwise, Centurion loses its value as a "rare" card or the "special" feeling of having it. Even Platinum, I think, starting to lose its value since AMEX started the "pay later" feature similar to a owning a credit card. I just hated that feature of the charge card.

Invitations are going out this year. Now by invitation by mysterious criteria. Was too easy to get with the 250k spending as people with any small business was putting everything through the card to get it. Rumor has it that it has to do with having the "right" kind of spending (whatever that means). They want members who will appreciate the benefits it brings and not just having the card for the sake of the card. My guess lots of luxury travel and hotels.

I have no idea why someone would pay to have that type of prestige. I feel like you get much better rewards with other cards, in most cases. Granted, I don't stay in alot of luxury hotels.

I think the benefits for card have definitely lagged as more people got it. Concierge went downhill. Less upgrades on flights. The upgrades on flights used to make the card more worthwhile. When we started last business, they offered centurion cards right away, but was too cheap to do so. Not sure if it was right or wrong decision.

the centurion card has no direkt link to upgrades... airlines upgrade you b/c of the membership card you receive from amex, so blame the airlines directly. also, the type you fare you book has to do with upgrades as well... ie full fare vs saver fare

Waste of money, and I wouldn't want to associate myself with people who think the card is impressive. Much better to be under the radar.

Centurion used to get you elite status with more airlines and therefore upgrades than it does now
