Can I use the $200 Airline Fee Credit on lounge?

Postby Sitti » Wed Apr 04, 2012 4:49 pm

Hello,

I am thinking about applying for Amex Platinum. I understand that it has $200 Airline Fee Credit. I was wondering if I can use this credit on lounge fee for additional guests that I travel with?

Btw, this Amex Platinum card, is it a plastic card just like any other credit cards? or does it use some sort of other material like carbon fiber Visa Black to make Amex Plat feel special?

Thank you

It's plastic.

The fee credit is only for a specific airline (you pick which one each year) and is only applied for charges coded as being from that airline. Lounge fees would seem to qualify, and probably do under AMEX's terms, but many lounges are run by third party contractors so that you might run into issues if, for example, your charge for a United lounge showed up as "Red Carpet Enterprises" or whatever. You might call AMEX and see what they say.

A little more of a pain, but I hear people are buying gift cards from airlines and it working. I guess you can then just use the gift cards for the fees.

To answer your question, the answer is no. The $200 credit is airline specific.

I select United as I fly out of Denver. I can use my Platinum card at the Red Carpet Lounges and be reimbursed. I cannot use it at a just any VIP lounge either. Just United, since that is my airline selection. I can also buy gift certificates to give to other travelers to use at the lounge and be credited back. Gift certificates can technically be used for any United purchase, including tickets, food, upgrades. It is made of plastic, just like any other credit card. Like all AmEx cards, they look really cool under black light or UV light.

You can use the $200 credit on lounge passes as long as you are registered with that airline... It will only make sense to pay for lounge passes if there's no Priority Pass Select lounge where you are... The Platinum also gives you access to Delta and American lounges if you are flying them and US airways regardless of which airline you are flying with...
Amex: Business Platinum (09/12) BCP $10,500 (03/13)
Visa: Capital One Journey $750 (04/11) Chase Freedom $1,800 (04/12)
MasterCard Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select $8,500 (05/13)
Discover: Discover It $2500 (07/11)
Store Cards: Amazon $3900 (12/11) Macy's $500 (04/11) Kohl's $500 (05/12) Victoria's Secret $750 (11/12)
